I recently was denied a medical waiver to USAFA and I was denied again after appealing it. Is this the end of the line, or can anything else be done?

Sorry to hear about the waiver difficulties. While there are many reasons an applicant may need a waiver, every condition is different. DoDMERB does not grant waivers - only the school can grant the waiver. The role of DoDMERB is to understand the regulations, look at the exams and patient records, and finally conclude whether an applicant meets the documented requirements. A failure to meet the requirements will result in a disqualification, and then it is up to the school to determine whether or not to issue a waiver. Waiver review typically involves a records review and often requires additional medical information (AMI) from a specialist in the field of medicine related to the disqualification.

If an applicant is denied a waiver, you can appeal. Should that appeal be denied, it would appear you have reached the end of the road in terms of options for THIS SCHOOL. Other Service Academies may handle the situation differently --- or they could handle it the same way.

We do not know the specifics of the case - and we do not need to have them here because 99% of us would lack the training to understand the information presented. If you have a desire to serve the nation and/or your community, there are still a number of options available to you. The military path may not be an option depending on the medical requirements and the individual situation.

Same here. My DD appealed and was denied. She has no health issues and doctors proved that she is very healthy but still got denied. I wish they give a reason why her appeal was denied. I do not understand.......

The USAFA medical exam system is broken. She passed the medical exam (performed at their site) but the medical denied it because she answered some questions "yes". Regardless of doctors' notes, the USAFA will always deny the medical appeal. This is a completely broken system. If people lie about the medical questions then will they pass them??? This is completely wrong.

My daughter will live a guilty feeling and learn the lesson that "don't be honest and cheating is good".

From what I’ve seen, Mr Mullen has offered a few times to have your daughter email him with this issue. Did she ever do that?

I wouldn’t let my daughter assume that the people that got waivers were dishonest or cheating.

@A1Janitor, That's not what I meant. I'm just saying that people including her could be answered "no" to all the questions and then she wouldn't be denied. Regardless of the doctors' prove that she still got denied.

Understood.

In reading the forums over the years (and with a son who got a waiver for colorblindness from USNA), it is my understanding that denials of waivers can be for more than the actual dq. For instance - was there someone on her slate that had a higher WCS that was 3Q?

The smarter people on this site can correct me.

Is it possible she wouldn’t have gotten the waiver if she lied?

Not true. DS received a medical DQ but, after submitting requested follow-up documentation (and a long wait), he was granted a waiver. Medical questions need to ALWAYS be answered with complete honesty.
