I’ve heard that other club sports like rowing take walk ons with little to no experience, and was wondering if that would be possible for club cycling as well? I do have about four years of prior experience, but stopped after my freshman year of high school.

Club sports at USNA are, by definition, done on a “walk-on” basis. Meaning anyone can try out. Doesn’t mean you’ll make the team, but you’re welcome to try. Different teams have different policies for those with limited experience. DD is on a club team with a few members who have little competitive experience. Those players participate in practices, but don’t travel. They may suit up for home games, but rarely play.

(The term “walk-on” is typically used at the varsity level, where those who aren’t on athletic scholarship are allowed to join the team without the benefit of financial support. Of course, at USNA, everyone is “on scholarship.”)

Just FYI, USNA crew (women's and men's) is a varsity sport. They allow walk-ons and some do that successfully, but it can be difficult to make the team in the long run (after plebe year) if you aren't experienced.

I'd recommend just sending an email to the coach, let him know your experience and then hop on your bike and try to get into shape again.
