Walking on to sports

What are the chances of being able to walk on to some of the lesser recruited sports on the Yard like the two sailing teams or the lightweight or heavyweight rowing team? For reference, I am a multi sport varsity athlete interested in playing a sport at USNA, but unfortunately I wrestle and play tennis and I am not at a high enough level for either of those sports to play for Navy.

Additionally, as a walk on, do you try out for these teams during Plebe Summer?

I heard better chance with both those especially rowing because lot of high schools don't offer if.

I’d you are good enough, you can make any team.

You will be competing against D1 athletes.

The club teams are highly competitive too. Some have D1 quality players on them.

My son found a spot on the endurance team plebe academic year. Other sports he was interested in he didn’t have a chance of making the team.

He loved it. He is now training for a half iron man to compete against his D1 water polo roommate - I think this December in California and for dive school.

The vast majority of rowers are walk-ons - both men and women, heavyweight and lightweight.

I was a coxswain on the '92 IRA Championship team and recall only a handful of recruited rowers across all 4 classes that were recruits.

Intercollegiate Sailing is mostly all people with extensive racing experience and will include recruited athletes. Varsity Offshore
is more often a place where less experienced folks can get a foothold.

I know this is a little off topic but does anyone know what to do if I want to add more hs sports to my record after already submitting my application? I was able to get into two sports that I didn't initially plan on participating in at the time I submitted my app.

At this point, with three days left until they intend to have decisions out I imagine it wouldn’t make much of a difference, but email your regional admissions counselor under ‘points of contact’ in your portal. Definitely can’t hurt!

Did you play? Did you have any leadership roles?

This late I doubt it would help.

Could it end up highlighting to them what you think your weakness in your application is?

That’s what we did. Emailed a team and individual pic and a list/picture of awards.

Hopefully not. Our state just approved a new women’s varsity sport for Spring, so we felt it was pertinent information since she plays a big role on both sides of the ball. 🏈

just curious - how difficult is it to walk onto women's rugby?
I can't say for certain, but as I just got back from CVW today, this might help. One of the women in my company was a rugby player, and she said that the team gets lots of walk ons each year for plebes and even some youngsters. According to her, most of the walk ons were former lacrosse, field hockey, and soccer players.

There are really three different types of sports at the Academy. DIV 1, Highly Competitive Club and Club. Walking on to a DIV 1 sport is extremenly difficult and unless you were recruited at other schools the path is difficult. The Club sports break into two unofficial categories. Things like sailing are pretty competitive where others will take walk-ons. It has been a few years since my DD graduated but walking on to most of the club sports would not have been very difficult. The club sport also have different levels. You may walk on and be on the C-Squad for rugby and have to work your way up while the recruited rugby player will be on the A-Squad and involved in more competition.

Is the men's team harder to walk onto?
I cannot speciffically tell you about USNA but at USMA anyone who really has some athletic ability and works hard would get to walk on. Now they may just be tackling dummies for the A-Squad but they would have an outlet to partcipate.

Do you think 177 6ft is big enough to be rower
