Was anybody on this board who was offered an Ike Skelton scholarship...

I believe this year ECP scholarships were also offered on the 2nd and 3rd boards, not just the first.
The logic of waiting until the second board to submit your application wouldn't necessarily do anything for or against you. You still might have ended up with no offer at all, even an ECP offer.

Look at it this way, if you received a 3yr offer on the first board and turned it down hoping to get a 4 yr offer on the 2nd or 3rd board, your chances of getting that 2nd offer are not very good.

There are always people that have strong applications that do not get offered anything. Many of them feel they might have a stronger application than those that received an offer. There is not a magical equation for receiving any offer, sometimes it's just the interpretation of the application by people that review them.

I agree and understand that if you checked NO for interest in the ECP scholarship on your application that it is confusing as to why that offer is made anyways, other than the board feels that is the best offer they can make you.

The difference is accepting a three year offer does not kick you out of consideration for a four year. In this case, candidates applied for an apple and were offered an orange, even though they said citrus gives them heartburn. And were there unsought ECP offers from the 2nd and 3rd boards? I know this forum is a small cross section but I was looking, and did not see anyone asking questions after those boards.

I believe you do have to be SMP and you get paid monthly by them to attend drills or if no drills close by then the school will have you do something in exchange.

Does your son have an interest in Active Duty?

yes, my son, did not check off that he wanted this, but was offered this after the first board and then nothing, even though everyone that saw his application said that he was a very good candidate and scored very well on his interview
In the exact same boat

A friend's daughter applied before the first board, received nothing on the 1st or 2nd review, then received Ike Skelton on the 3rd. No idea if they checked interest in it or not. She is turning down the offer and will go with Plan A school ROTC and try for a scholarship while she's there.

Good for you! I just wish they were clear when it was awarded that was all that you would get. We could have made a more educated decision. The misinformation involved with this is what distresses me the most. Either make the opt out on the application a true opt out, or be up front at the time of the award this is how the program works.

If your DS/DD has any desire to serve in the Active Duty Army, turning down the 2 year scholarship will turn out to be a good idea. Going to a traditional ROTC program at a 4 year school will be a much better opportunity to get Active Duty. Work hard and show up prepared and there could be scholarships available through the battalion.

Good advice! I have looked at this scholarship from all angles and there is one thing I can't seem to find the answer to. While you are going to the MJC for the first two years do you have to be in SMP?

My DD took the ECP scholarship and I have been doing a lot of research on the scholarship. If you were awarded a ECP then you will not be offered a ROTC scholarship that was your offer. Also yes you will be SMP in either the Guard or Reserves after you go to Ft. Knox for a month before you go to school. For example my DD leaves a week after graduation before heading off. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

I think a big confusion was, that last year the offers seemed to be separate from the board, and people were still getting offers later, it seems this year was different. There was some info out there stating that was the only offer to be had, but most of us did not believe it. According to @MohawkArmyROTC , who is a ROO and has more access to good information than most of us, ECP offers were made based on the boards perception that the OML score given would fall below the line, but applicants would still be considered. I guess there are two ways to look at it, either the names did not get put back on the list, or they did indeed fall below the line when all was said and done. We will never know one way or the other since OML numbers are not available. It is just good info to know for next year. Going back to previous posters, every year there are people that are offered nothing, and their stats look amazing! Good luck to your son, I know this is a tough time, and there are plenty of scholarships out there still to be had. Two of my favorite people on this board both have sons who were given scholarships after either not applying nationally (AROTC-dad) or not receiving one (K2Rider), in the case of the latter, his son commissioned last year, after receiving a 4 year scholarship via a campus scholarship, so even after the shock and disappointment of not receiving a national scholarship, everything worked out great! My husband always says something cheesy to our girls when their goals seem to get derailed. He says the 'ride isn't over unless you jump off the train'. Anyway, good luck and please keep us posted!

Wow! Congratulations. It's a success from an ECP turned down. I only applied for AROTC because I really know that's what I want. I have narrowed it down to Norwich and UNG and am glad I turned down the ECP because I know I will be happy at either place. I also plan on computer science cyber security. Good luck in Michigan.

OP... Very happy for you and DS!

Thanks! With my Army Reserve Nurse Corp, his dad's enlisted Navy, and now an AF cadet at the dinner table, we are working on covering all the branches. My nephew was USMC (is? Do you ever quit being a Marine?), so we just need to find a Coastie.
