Was losing Rolling Admissions beneficial?

. . Overall I think that rolling admissions are no longer necessary to insure a great, competitive class. Same comment regarding LOA's for most candidates.

. . .

One thing I will add is that at least my RC was very proactive about contacting candidates to accept or reject their appointments in a timely manner.

For example - The most outstanding people with Presidential nominations should not have to wait for the Congressional nomination process - they are competing with the other Presidential nominees for the allocated 100 slots.

Except, some highly qualified candidates could hold out. I don't know if early appointment offers have a short suspense for accepting the offer. My memory is failing me, but I believe I had a candidate with an appointment offer in October several years ago, waited until April to turn it down when he finally got an offer for Navy. I was surprised how someone so highly regarded by West Point didn't get the same treatement by Navy.

This works both ways. I have seen candidates in this District who were highly sought-after by Navy that were not considered to be top candidates by West Point. This year we had many more applicants for WP (49) than for Navy (12). One of our good candidates who DID NOT win a nomination for WP was offered a slot for Navy and he was quickly accepted for admission.

I can not explain why that happens except to say that there are differences of opinions when evaluating candidates. I am not "inside" the Navy admissions process so I do not know if they weigh qualifications differently.
