We just got word that Son's GF is being sent home. 3 stress fractures in her foot. :(

They say she has a guaranteed re-admission for next year.

how did it happen?

Oh my goodness, that's a bummer and I feel so bad for her. How did she do it? We knew someone that broke an ankle but wasn't sent home; wonder what determines if one stays and recuperates or is sent home. She will be in our prayers.

We knew about 1 stress fracture earlier in the spring. (Salutatorian, she was on crutches at graduation.:frown:) But, she healed and DoDMERB re-qualified her on June 22. Nothing like last minute, huh?

Well, it appears that was premature and she got worse, not better.

Another year of bubble wrap. This time double thick.

You can't miss more than 5 (maybe 7) days of BCT training. Injury this early that would prevent completing the rest of the tasks of BCT would be cause for "medical turnback" (which is what GF now is). IMO, a similar injury at end of JV probably wouldn't result in turnback as they would have completed the required training (time between JV & A-day is alot of briefings, some marching but might be able to do that with crutches - def can't do confidence / assault course on crutches).

Pray the GF uses the time home wisely -- take college courses to make next year academics / overall academics easier for her.

Actually, it's 8 training days that you can't miss. (Unless they changed it this year). Last year they had a gazillion exceptions because half the class had Swine Flu. But you are correct that if they can make it through jacks, and then get hurt, they will do everything to hold onto them. Also, if it's an injury that can be worked around; e.g. finger, toe, wrist, etc... and they can get through the required training. they'll let them continue. Remember, athletes know this, there's a difference between playing HURT and playing INJURED. You've got to be pretty injured to get set back. Fortunately, this young lady has another chance next year. If I was her, I'd be looking real quick to see if I could get back that ROTC scholarship. You want to go to school anyway for a year. Never know..... ROTC might be a good calling for her. I'm pretty sure that she can't get the offer back, being she accepted the academy; but it would be nice.

I doubt she has retained her DODMERB qualifications after this. They probably won't be so quick to re-clear her again.

Geez, that sucks. Is it easy to get injured during BCT?
Basic is stressful, yes, and even though lots of people go to sick call, real medical emergencies or injuries are uncommon, with the exception of blisters from basics who are not used to wearing boots all the time. Nothing that is demanded in basic (especially first beast) is dangerous.

She will need a new Dodmerb physical, but since it was a stress fracture and not anything more, I can't see it being a big deal for clearance. Stress fractures, if my memory serves me correctly do not require the traditional 6-8 week hard cast, it is more likely she will be put in some form of an immobilizer.

The "broken" leg is different because it is a true fractured bone, thus they are going to want to make sure that it is healed 100% and worse if it required pins they will be very cautious. Every yr there will be someone on this site or CC that posts the OMG my cadet got injured and is now a turnback. There has only been one cadet that I can recall even as a medical turnback who did not get cleared. The reason why, he broke his leg at BCT, got cleared to come back the next yr and a few days in he got injured again. The AFA saw him as a 2 time turnback.

This also goes to understanding why people say CONGRATS and now wrap yourself up in Bubble wrap. Injuries can cause not only physical pain, but emotional stress.

My son was one of the ones that "didn't make it to the dorm room". Once he arrived at USAFA as part of the class of 2013 one of the Dr's during the screening became concerned that he may have a something wrong that had been over looked during the DODMER exam. He was sent home and had to undergo a bunch of additional test that determined NOTHING was wrong. It was a very diffecult year for him and he had to go through much of the selection process again to return to USAFA. He is thrilled to be part of the class 0f 2014 and said the only way he is coming home again is in a...well I'm sure you can guess. I, like all of us parents and friends of cadets, will be proud of him regardless. Good luck and thank you to all current and passed cadets and members of our armed forces. Happy 4th!

Congrats to your son on his second time around! If you have any questions, please ask. If you have anything specific to Wisconsin cadets or the Wisconsin Parent's group, you can send me a PM.

DougBetsy - how is she doing?

They will 'hold' her spot for her provided the stress fractures heal completely.
She will NOT need another physical. The physical is good for two years. She will need to work closely with DoDMERB, however to become medically cleared.
Stress fractures are not uncommon but take time to heal completely. Often they are caused by overtraining and can easily recur if one does "too much too soon". This sounds like this is the case, if she was on crutches at graduation.
Unless there is something medically wrong with her bone structure, there is every reason to believe that with proper medical treatment she will make a complete recovery by next June. She should be able to join the Class of 2015 if she desires.
