Just re-read the PTR packet - looks like they discourage plebes from bringing a watch - but I thought I read somewhere that they should bring a watch to I-day...

any thoughts? one post suggested putting it in a care package?

I've also read mixed things on whether or not to have a watch during Plebe Summer, but at our USNA GA picnic last week some current Mids (including a couple of Plebe Summer Detailers) said that you shouldn't show up wearing a watch, as it will be taken from you - they don't want you wearing a watch during Plebe Summer. They didn't seem very clear on whether you could keep one if it was sent to you in a care package. They said your detailer will open your packages in front of you and remove anything that is not allowed, e.g. knives, candy.

This is true. There really is no need for a watch ever at USNA, more so during plebe summer. What's better than always having someone else responsible for your time management?

we brought/bought our son a timex over parent weekend ... he didnt need it until then ... and sometime over the year he left it at the pool ... so it's history ... I would get a reliable, fairly cheap watch for regular duty ... an expenisive watch is a great dress up accessory.

Watch for Plebe Summer is just a waste of time.:thumb: Your Plebe will be told what time it is and he/she will agree with it. AC year a watch is a good thing but make it a cheap waterproof.

Yes it will be confiscated on I-day, but it is stored in an Upperclassman's room and will be returned immediately following Plebe Summer. Having a watch during Plebe Summer is prohibited in order to add to the confusion of everything. However, during the Academic Year, when there aren't Upperclassmen running you around and being everywhere on time is completely your responsibility, having a watch (or cell phone with clock) is very important. Especially since we Upperclassmen usually require Plebes to be everywhere (briefs, formations, etc) about 15 minutes early (if possible).

This, and also remember that Bancroft Hall time is a little different than real time.

Other things to pack

My son went and bought everything on the PTR packet list of acceptable things to bring. Got a duffle bag and everything fits. Included a set of all paperwork sent, pics for the corkboard......

anything else to throw in that is acceptable but not on the list?

Question: Do you label anything? Don't want him to look like he's going to summer camp, but just curious.

Oh he is going to summer camp. I know it sounds wise to bring all of that stuff on the acceptable items list, but it isn't really necessary and might actually turn out to be a burden. I guess your kid will find out in due time.

Well, everybody chime in please.

He's packed 6 socks, 6 underwear, 6 tshirts, 4 underarmor, running shoes, toiletries, glasses case, calculator for his calculus test (suggested). Is this really too much?
His duffle bag is about the size of a carry-on.

That sounds pretty manageable. You say duffle bag and it brings about images of a large, unwieldy pack. Sounds like he'll be ok. They let them wear under armor during PS now? We were strictly forbidden. It provided too much comfort!

Whew! Thought that even those measely things were too much for a moment! We went to the store and opened up all the duffle bags, stuffed them with the stuff and decided which one didn't look ridiculous. Then we put things back on the shelf that didn't fit into the bag. Even made sure the duffle was black and non-descript.
