Hello!

What kind of watch would be nice to bring along? I thought it would help me keep time after workouts, but I was stuck on exactly whether a smartwatch model or a normal watch would be better.

You will not be allowedato haveva watch during INDOC. Not knowing what time it is makes up pary of the torture. You will not be allowed to use a smart watch as a plebe. G shock or something similar is good. Something sturdy and water resistant.

Buy the cheapest, plastic, minimum function Casio or timex. G-Shock is on the high end of the spectrum, I recommend a $30-$35 variation. It will serve you well.

For the academic year, cheap is good.
During INDOC plebes won't be allowed to have watches. They'll tell you what to do, how to do it, and when. ;)

...What they said. No watch during Indoc. DS used a cheapo for the remainder of Plebe year. We got him a nice G-Shock as a gift after finishing first year, in preparation for first sea tour. He loved it.

Go with a diver instead of buying endless cheap watches, buy one mid range watch that will last you a decade. A solid choice would be the Seiko SKX 007.

I have been wearing a stainless automatic dive watch for decades, but I think those are a little old-fashioned for your average Mid.
They seem all about vibration alarms and black plastic, now. Your mileage may vary. ;)

I'm a mid and wear a stainless steel auto diver with a bracelet as my daily. I don't think they're old fashioned at all -- timeless watches.

Friendly advice: Get a $1.98 black plastic watch to start and figure it out from there. In less than 5 months you will be there running around in khakis wondering why you ever decided to do this. Spend these next months enjoying your friends, family, sleep, and normalcy. I promise when you are at KP this summer you won't regret not spending more time worrying about the small stuff.

My DS has used the same $25 black plastic Armitron digital watch for all four years in college. It had military time and a stopwatch plus a night light. He has put it through hell and it continues to work.

When he commissions this May, he will be getting a much nicer G-Shock watch.

Current mid here... you want something strong and reliable. A digital G-shock is always a good go to. Watches take a beating while out at sea. Choose something you dont mind getting wet, dirty, oily, scratched, or dropped.

I actually stopped wearing a watch when I was sailing. I really only needed it when I was ashore, but often went ashore without one to keep potential muggers away. I don't wear one now, either. I have a phone that lets me know what time it is. Onboard, there are clocks in nearly every manned space.. . . . I have only one watch now, and I wear it as more of an adornment every now and then since the face of it is an EOT replica. Kinda hard to tell time on it, but the cool factor is way up there. . . .

A G-Shock or something similar is a great option, something sturdy and water-resistant would be perfect for your needs.
