We are ready!

Looks like there is a shortage of lard in Annapolis...I seem to recall the entire monument being covered a lot thicker.
(Of course, it really doesn't matter...the thick layer gets wiped off pretty quickly, its that last thin film that gets ya !)
When is Herndon ? Seems like the whole Commissioning Week is different these days, with Graduation on Friday instead of Wednesday.

The lard is a lot lighter. Used to be 200 lbs was the standard. We pulled up about 20 years of photos to compare and it has gotten light. Not sure it makes that much of a difference. Now when the class of ‘98 had to get over the hurdle of the Dixie cup being duct taped... that was another story. Commissioning week has mostly been on Friday for awhile now. Like 20+ years. A few times it has gone back to Wed. Usually it’s because of Memorials Day weekend that it could shift.

It really doesn't matter..that heavy coat gets wiped away pretty quick, but the thin layer of what is left behind is what makes it slick. Of course, that thick layer has to go somewhere... and makes a mell of a hess.

Oh yeah. Removing the lard from my body and my eyes burned for days. It’s a pretty gross. After 2 hours it gets old and you just want it over with.

So flights are out for May and I am in a debate with husband if we should go see our plebe & the 2022 plebes climb Herndon. If we fly in the Friday before the Climb, exams should be over? will he have liberty that weekend and will it be the usual Saturday town, Sunday yard since they will still be plebes till Monday? Will we get time with him Monday- heard a tip to stay till Tuesday since we will bet to see the Blue Angels practice for commissioning- any tips -or experiences welcomed. 6 week exams just finished and I'm excited to plan another trip to Annapolis since it is still 55 days till he come home for Thanksgiving.

You can probably find an old June, er Commissioning , Week schedule online. Perhaps a current Midshipman can weigh in, but exams are usually done well before Commissioning Week. (There used to be a Dead Week between finals and Commissioning Week). Once Commissioning Week starts, liberty is pretty generous ...regardless of class. However, you will want to check on when Sea Trials is done .

While certainly up to you, and I'm sure that plenty of Plebe parents attend, I wouldn't think Herndon rates a specific trip. It's really an event or rite of passage for the Plebes, and I recall it was a good opportunity for comradery in town with Classmates rather than parents. If you want to observe the spectacle...you will have the opportunity during DS/DD Commissioning week (although I suspect at that time, DS/DD won't even care about Herndon any longer).

Oh, I'm going to Herndon in May.
He can have all the time he wants with his friends afterwards, but we're going to be there in lawn chairs with a cooler full of drinks and snacks.

If you can go to Herndon it is fun. Your DS/DD May want to spend time with buddies, but many parents do go to Herndon. It was my parents one trip Plebe Year to visit, but each family is different. Exams will have been over for a week or more. The Yard is a fun time during all this. It’s full of energy and excitement. One caution... if you DS/DD has zero block training they could miss Herndon.
