If people want to give DD jewelry as high school graduation gift, are they allowed to wear them daily at CGA? It seems like the only earrings we've ever seen in pictures are simple pearl studs. Is it just a coincidence or is that the only kind of earrings they're allowed to wear? What about necklaces and rings?

She's actually CGAS first year, but are the rules different?

Uniform regs for the Coast Guard are earrings must be studs--no hoops or dangling, and only one in each ear. Only one neck chain for a religious symbol, which must be tucked inside the blouse. Only one ring on each hand (not counting wedding ring). A watch may be worn on the wrist, and only one bracelet (ID type) may be worn on the other.

Thank you for the information! So, can I assume that the the studs don't have to be pearls? As I wrote, pearls are all I saw, but DD is not crazy about pearls for everyday wear.

Diamonds or pearls (or balls, whatever they're called... you know, silver or gold), and I believe there's a max size with that. Google "Coast Guard uniform regulations."

Ok, thank you! DD actually just received emeralds, but they are no go then, huh?

From the 2009 USCG uniform manual:

Earrings will be 4-6mm ball studs (approx. 1/8 – ¼ inch), natural white pearl (colored pearls not authorized), white diamond, plain gold or silver with a shiny or brushed matte finish settings. Decorative or combination settings not authorized. Earrings are not authorized for men in uniform at any time or when on leave or liberty on a military facility. Oh perfect, thank you! I was looking for this but couldn't find it earlier. The earrings she received won't work according to this. At least we know now not to bother taking them.

Keep in mind that she won't be in uniform forever. While she'll spend the majority of her time during 4/c year in some kind of uniform, both on and off base, there will be times when she is far enough away from CGA that she can wear those earrings. It could be on a long weekend trip to NY or Boston or some other kind of adventure. It's up to her.

After 4/c year, she'll be in Rec Gear on the weekends as a 3/c and civilian clothes as a 2/c and 1/c so there's plenty of time to get to wear more colorful/fun things. 4/c year makes you appreciate the little things.

That's great to know. Thank you!
