Wearing SDB's

Good Evening All,

I was wondering if it was okay if I go to Christmas Eve mass in my Service Dress Blues. I talked to people around the unit and they kinda gave me vibe like, "If you want to."
The MIDN Regulations doesn't say I can't, but I also don't want to ruffle any feathers. I have seen an Academy kid wear his stuff at my Parish for Christmas but, as an NROTC MIDN I know we fly by different rules.
Thank you for your time.

I was just curious as to what the final decision and outcome was on this one? If you wore the SDBs do you think it was a wise decision after having done so?

I wore them. It felt great, and no one really said anything. Maybe I shouldn't have, I don't know. But I did and felt fine.
Also, there were other guys, both in my grades from grade school, who wore their uniforms - one Army enlisted and one Air Force cadet (AFROTC). My parish has a strong military background.

Glad it worked out OK for you... and way to keep up with the Joneses! :D

Kinnem! This is not about keeping up with the Joneses. This is about representing our nation and the fight for freedom. OP is proud of his service and wants to wear his uniform. My USNA DS did the same thing when he was home. He wore his SDBs to church and to our HS where I am a teacher. We are all proud of him for serving. I did not tell him to do this. He even goes to a different church than we do! Maybe his attitude will change in the future but this patriotism should be encouraged, not ridiculed.

I'm sure we'll all be very proud of him once he actually begins to serve. Out of curiosity, the one enlisted fellow who was in--has he been in for more than a year or two, or is he fresh from basic and AIT?

When I was in ROTC, I was proud of my decision to pursue a commission as an Army officer.....so I bought an American flag lapel pin. IMO a church service, or the majority of public places/events, is not the place for wearing a uniform, I would hope someone was proud of their service in or out of uniform, but to each their own.

Ginko, by no means does Kinnem need me to speak for him, but I think you missed the context he was trying to relay as it certainly wasn't ridicule.

Jeez, I was simply making a joke about the number of folks who showed up in their dress uniforms. Guess you didn't see the big grin at the end of the post. You do know my own son is in his final semester of NROTC and will soon commission. We're all proud of these kids. Sort of goes without saying.

ginko, you're just newer to the boards. no worries. once you've been on here a while you will see that Kinnem is not about the ridicule at all. he is ELE

+1 vista. It is very hard to understand intonation on forums. Kinnem impo would be the very last poster on here that would be rude.

I don't think I ever wore my uniform outside of official military functions, at work, or to and from. Neither of my sons have ever brought their uniforms home with them during their time in ROTC. My older son commissioned in 2012, he changes in to civilian clothes before he even leaves work, granted he is in Hawaii and can't wait to get shorts on.

Son's never thought about wearing their ROTC uniforms to civilian functions, their cadre were pretty clear about how and when to wear their uniforms either in ROTC or Active Duty, weddings where the groom is in uniform, military funerals, and so on.

They both have a nice suit for any formal civilian occasions.

Nobody flame me, but I think that most AD would rather not ever wear their uniform if given an option, especially as they go up the ranks.

Bullet wore his mess dress to weddings and his blues to funerals (immediate family only). It is a pain in the arse (PITA). You have to get dry cleaned, which means pulling out the ruler for ribbons and medals. Lint brushing, shirt garters, shining shoes, etc. So much easier to wear a suit!

That brings it back to the why some feel that they shouldn't do it.

My Bullet and my DS are very proud to defend this great nation....I guess they are just too lazy to wear the uniform! Those that matter know, and all that matters to me is those that matter.

Like I said kinnem is the nice poster. Me, well that is up to everyone else to decide!

Nice PIMA :) . . .

I would say the wear of SDBs outside of "work" or official functions is very situationally dependent and is a very personal decision.

I remember proudly wearing my Dress Blues home as a Freshman/doolie during the holiday break from USAFA. (Also remember desperately wanting to get out of the dress blues and into some jeans during parents weekend!)

After graduation, wore it for our wedding. While on AD, wore it to military funerals of family and friends to respect their previous service.

Retired as an O-6 in Dec 2007. The uniform is in the closet. Next use will hopefully be to administer the oath to my DS when he commissions.

Agreed.

Let's not make a mountain out of a molehill. If anyone rates to wear a uniform and does so within the established regulations then it becomes a personal choice. Some report here that they would, others would not. All good. Certainly a case of "Different strokes for different folks."

Bullet pulled his blues out of the closet to commission another poster (USAFA) on this site. He pulled it out in 2012 to administers DSs oath. Mess dress was pulled out in 10 for USAFA. 2014 for DSs UPT winging and his wedding.

DS wore his Mess dress for the wedding, but did no wear his blues for dress rehearsal. His FIL (retired AF) and his Dad did not where their blues for the rhearsal either (Catholic mass)
~ Bullet did for ours.

Point is, as far as I am concerned it is your choice.
~ As a wife I was happier when he wore the suit!
