If you get turned down by West Point and take a 4 year ROTC scholarship, if you try again for WP and get in can you accept the appointment or are you bound to the ROTC scholarship?

You a free to re-apply to West Point and accept. An appointment to WP trumps a ROTC scholarship.

thanks. I was going to ask at my ROTC interview execpt I didn't get a chance to bring it up.

Just A Mom, please don't ever say WP appointments trump an ROTC scholarship. That is most certainly not true. Both pathways offer very unique experiences in their own way. It all depends on what you want to get out of the program. Although I am a cadet attending USMA, I still think that there are many ROTC programs out there that would benefit me in more ways than USMA.

French, the Professor of Military Science gives out ROTC scholarships based upon your merits and dedication towards finishing the 4 year program in ROTC to become a commissioned officer. He is limited with scholarships and must commission a certain number of people a year. I highly suggest you talk this over with him. Have you looked into AOG scholarships to a junior military college?

Morningdark: I believe that you misunderstood what JAM was saying. I'm thinking that she meant that you are released from any obligation of a ROTC scholarship IF you receive an appointment, NOT that the appointment is better that the ROTC scholarship.

JAM - not trying to put words in your mouth so correct me if I am wrong in your intentions. :thumb:

Buff81 - you are correct.

You misunderstand.

By a WP Appointment "trumping" ROTC - what is meant is that your contract to serve through your ROTC scholarship becomes null and void. Your new commitment is through West Point.

Some folks think that if you sign a contract you won't be released from it. ROTC can't make you stay if you win a WP Appointment.

I have all the respect in the world for Army ROTC.

EDIT: we cross posted - it's ok. If you were confused then probably someone else was confused as well.

BTW - an AOG scholarship is awarded by West Point, they don't make those awards generally until the spring.
