We are from the midwest so forgive my ignorance on crew/rowing (are they one in the same?? ).Does WP have a women's crew or rowing team? I assume this is a club team?

DD is a long time swimmer and was considering some possible options post swimming retirement. :)Seemed like a sport that her swimming background would lend itself to. Any details anyone could provide would be appreciated. Is there a spot or role for a beginner or is it something that would require a substantial past experience?

WP Crew and Rowing are the same. From what I can tell they welcome beginners and have a "tryout" in August. They may even do this during Beast. And I think it is a club sport, but you get treated as a Core Athlete, which has its benefits. First year crew will be on "novice" boats. It is a lot harder than it looks to get 4 to 8 people rowing in sync.

What does "core athlete" mean and what are the benefits?

Not sure now if it is Corps or Core. In my mind I always thought "core"...regardless, if you are one of these types, you generally eat at a team table and are often exempt from drill, parade practice, etc because of team practices.

If memory serves me right sports that are NCAA level are Corps Squad and Club sports are Club Squad. I believe Corps Squad gets team tables and exempt from certain things in season such as drill. Club squad I believe mostly allows for dedicated practice time vice participation in intramural sports with very few exemptions. I can't remember all the details, but I am sure someone will chime in if I am off the mark.

Seems like a lot of retired swimmers give triathlon a try; WP has a VERY good triathlon team/program

My son is in the class of 2018 and is from Arizona. He had never been in a boat on a river before. You learn about the club sports during Beast and then you have tryouts the first month of classes. There is a novice team and a varsity team. The varsity team is usually smaller than the novice team. Men and Women are on the same crew team but break out for the events at the regattas. I think legs and back strength are more important than upper body strength. Ideally they want tall people with long legs and arms. Have your daughter work out at the gym on the erg machine since that is how they have tryouts. The kids practice in the late afternoon/early evening on the Hudson rather than in the morning. I think they get out of some of the parades and formations for practice and/or regattas. My son barely made the novice team but has moved up from the third boat to the second boat. Once you make the team, it is more about endurance than ability. The best part of making the team is plugging in early to a large group of friends outside of the roommates and company members. My son loves the kids on the team.

I think everyone's best bet would be to try stuff that interest them as an athletic. If you don't make the cross country team join the marathon team, if you don't make the wrestling team do judo, etc. there is so many new opportunities!
