West Point rated number one by Forbes as best University in America

So stop repeating it!

The Service Academies got a nice write up from an unreliable source. I remember Navy was top 10 back in the 80's when I was there, and I only remember because it was the first time a Service Academy made top 10 (the whole ranking thing was pretty new, mind you). Don't remember which magazine because nobody cared then, either. Do you REALLY think anybody who applies to a Service Academy based on a magazine rank will make it more than 2 steps into the process? Is this going to cause ANY problems in the very strict screening process? Is this a problem, for anybody?
Relax and enjoy the kind words. It doesn't happen very often. And USNA being 30th is STILL funny.

jscam, the service academies may have been in the top 10 with Forbes, but they have never even came close to being in the top 10 with U.S. News and World Report or with Princeton Review. You cannot rely on ratings to judge what is the best college. It is too subjective and takes into account the wrong things. The best college can only be judged on career choices, majors, and by academic programs. How many times does this have to be repeated?

Well, surprise, US News and World Report just rated the USMA #1 and #14, depending on which category you are looking at, for 2009

Morningdarkcloudofdoom: we are all anxious to hear what Princeton Review says as well.

The Princeton Review said this back on August 2, 2009:

Princeton Review ranks West Point high in certain categories

WEST POINT – The Princeton review has ranked West Point as having the “Most Accessible Professors” and in the top 10 of all American colleges in the areas of “More to Do on Campus”, “Don’t Inhale”, “Most politically active students’ and “Best classroom experience.”

“We are very proud of our nationally renowned education program and attribute much of our success to such factors as accessibility of faculty, lively classroom discussions and experiences, and enrichment opportunities outside the classroom,” said Dean of Academics Brig. Gen. Patrick Finnegan. “Our small class size, where every course from freshman through senior years is taught in seminar sized groups of no more than 18 cadets, increases the engagement of faculty with students and enhances the overall educational experience.”

The Princeton Review, an education services company known for its test prep courses, includes USMA in its annual book, “The Best 371 Colleges.”

Yea, number 14 on the liberal arts colleges list. I mentioned this in one of the previous threads (I may have said 15th). Also note that West Point is ranked #1 on the PUBLIC liberal arts colleges list. Almost every liberal arts college in America is PRIVATE. I'm not going to argue about this. My main argument is the truth: that college rankings are stupid and don't mean a thing. It depends on your major and academic track. If you want to be involved in major international studies, Georgetown University would easily beat West Point. If you wanted to major in Civil Engineering, USMA would likewise easily beat Georgetown. This is coming from me... a cadet that currently attends USMA. Clearly I'm not being arrogant here. I can be just like every other big headed cadet by going around the block screaming that they go to the BEST college in the U.S. BECAUSE FORBES SAID SO. I'm being totally realistic here.

Sir, VMI is ranked as the third best PUBLIC liberal arts college. We aren't including the ridiculous PRIVATE liberal arts schools. VMI has an outstanding academic program from what I have heard. Alas, more reasons why college rankings are worthless and should not be considered when making college decisions.

I can think of three PUBLIC "liberal arts" schools as well....in that list would be more than just USMA.

Because I know VMI, and I can name more than 3 liberal arts colleges that I would rank above it....can't you?

NO, not really because there are not that many. Actually the category is PUBLIC Liberal Arts College. US News uses very specific criteria to denote a Liberal Arts College. If you are thinking of USAFA, USCGA and USMMA they don't qualify for this category.
There just are not many Public Liberal Arts Colleges.
Also - I would not necessarily rank VMI below CGA nor MMA - of offense to any of those fine schools.

If you want to see how US News ranks CGA and MMA, look here:
http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/college/bacc-north-search

#2 AND #4 for Baccalaureate Universities in the North. Not too shabby.
USAFA is here:

The Top baccalaureate University in the West.

How do USMA and USNA qualify as "Liberal Arts" while USCGA, USMMA and USAFA don't?

Hey, I'm not saying I WANT then to qualify as liberal arts, just wondering ho USMA and USNA do....must be West Points Theater majors....

Are you serious?
Do you need someone to do all your homework for you?

Click on the links - the criteria is spelled out.
Baccalaureate Colleges:
These colleges, including Cooper Union and Tuskegee, focus on undergraduate education but grant fewer than half their degrees in liberal arts disciplines.
Their students earn degrees in engineering, business, health professions or professional programs.

Liberal Arts Colleges:
Among the liberal arts colleges are schools like Oberlin and Harvey Mudd, which emphasize undergraduate education and award at least half of their degrees in the liberal arts fields of study.
Since you will ask - Liberal Arts fields of study include Chemistry, Physics, History, Political Science, Military History, Mathematics - to name a few.

US News classifies different colleges to compare apples with apples.
Until a couple of years ago, US News put the Service Academies in a special category but they no longer do that.

They do include them in Engineering Rankings - where they rank the top ten:

if you click on the link:
#5 - USMA
#6 - USNA
#8 - USAFA.

USMA still wins.

It is $0. If a New Cadet can't afford the fee then it is waived and wrapped into the "loan". The Education is free. Cadet income is used to pay for issued items and other fees that the Government doesn't cover, i.e. football tickets.

I gotta say..... The education isn't free.... none of them.....

WOW... just curious... JAM do you follow LITS around and just post after him?
.. but this is a very rude response.....

I agree, this is kind of getting out of hand!
LITS is one of the most valuable posters here and it seems that someone (maybe a mod too) have an agenda...very sad

Must also concur. JAM gets away with saying anything she wants while LITS receives a ban. Nice to know that leadership on the site is so impartial.

Seriously, peeps up there, you've let USNA69 reincarnate re-emerge and let JAM begin with this nonsense again. Why are the rest of us always the bad guys?
