West Point SLE 2021

He also applied to Navy and hasn't heard back from them yet either. I wonder if others in the past received acceptances late in the

I am not sure if my theory is correct but I do know that my sons two friends from school got into SLE right away and both plan on pursuing (science/medical/engineering routes).
Does WP know your intended interests for SLE applications? I do not remember putting down my interest in government but I do not remember what all was required. Maybe they see that the math score was lower for me on the PSAT and are looking at that as a factor...I am not quite sure.

Well the issue is he has zero idea if a military college experience would be right for him so he was really hoping to try SLE to get a sense of what it would be like.
This is the same for me. None of my family is in the military so I was hoping to get accepted into SLE to gauge my interest. However, I have spoken to a few people that attended WP to get an idea, but it is not the same as experiencing it myself. Maybe he can try to visit WP?

My son has not received an acceptance yet for SLE or Navy. Is it same to assume he will not be accepted? I understand we will hear either way by the end of April. Trying to hold out hope but i'm guessing the chances are low at this point. He has a decent SAT score of 1300 and lots of leadership awards and experience (Eagle Scout, etc...). I am guessing since he is not interested in pursuing a Math, Engineering or Science degree it has really hindered his chances of getting in. He is looking to get more into law and government. If he does not get into SLE then he will not apply to West Point. Since he still would love to serve his country he wants to explore ROTC. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Good luck everyone!
My daughter really wanted to attend West Point but did not get invited to SLE however she did get accepted to the academy and is graduating next month. Not getting into SLE should not discourage your son from applying. My daughter was also accepted with a 1200 SAT. She took the SAT many times and improved each time she took it so I think that helped.

That is very inspiring. Congratulations to your daughter. :) I hope she had a wonderful experience at WP.

I agree, it is not the same thing. We spoke with a former graduate and it was extremely helpful though. I am not positive if my son will want to still apply but since it is virtual it isn't the typical SLE experience anyway. If he applied and were accepted we would definitely take him to visit.

My son was told by admissions not to read much into not getting into SLE--that in fact most of the class does not attend SLE. My son applied for SLE, had very low scores at the time and was not selected. He has however received an appointment for the Class of 2025 and has accepted the appointment. Do pursue plan B--AROTC scholarship, but do not quit pursuing West Point based on SLE. My son eventually had a 1300 SAT and had leadership in sports, Scouts, etc. It is way too early in the game to make assumptions on admission.

My personal opinion is not to close any doors at this point. With the exception of the nominations process, just about everything he would do for SA applications is relevant to ROTC applications. My 2023 cadet agrees that even if he were to not receive an appointment, the process in itself was a very valuable experience. If he gets a chance, it would probably be helpful to talk with his Field Force Rep to get a better handle on his desired education/career path and how/if West Point is a good way to get where he wants to go.

Thank you so much for this excellent advice! Truly appreciate it. Best of luck to your cadet.

Thank you, this is very inspiring. He said he will still apply to WP.

You may also want to look at the Senior Military Colleges--especially if they offer campus and over-night visits to get a look at the military life. My son visited pre-Covid on an overnight visit to VMI and was able to spend the night in the barracks and talk to first year students about their experience. Could be a substitute to the SLE window on military life.

I don't think your intended field of study is a factor because it isn't on the application anywhere and WP also has law majors for those who are interested in that field. For your question on PSAT scores, unless the only score you have submitted is a PSAT, that score won't lower your file. If you have an ACT or SAT score submitted, they typically prefer those scores but even then, they look at your highest score in all areas and base your file on that. As an example, if you had a 1220 SAT and 20 ACT, WP would score your file based on the 1220. If you took the ACT again and got a 29, they would switch it over and base your file on the 29. You are correct though in that WP likes high math scores. WP would prefer a 620ENG 700MATH over a 700ENG 620MATH. Regardless, a 1320 is a 1320 so if this is the case don't stress about it.

From my understanding we will hear by the end of April. Hopefully, we'll hear by Friday. If not, my son will reach out over the weekend.

I reached out this morning and was told:
"We are currently reviewing applications and Candidates will be notified by email either way of our decision, we hope to be complete in the next few days".
