What are considered the "highly competitive districts"?

I second Northern Virginia and Annapolis with NOVA in the lead. I sat on a MOC board a few times when I lived there. The stats are unbelievable. I sat on a MOC Board this year in another state where I live. We interviewed 25 kids. We had 2 that had the stats I saw in NOVA by the dozens there. I had a squad mate Plebe Year from Fairfax. We had 5 of his high school classmates in our class. That was just one of many high schools in thad area.

I agree with you. We lived in Bethesda/ Chevy Chase last year and my daughter believed you have to be in the top 1% academically to be even considered by USNA if you live Maryland.

Totally agree on NoVA. I seem to recall seeing a statistic that VA Senators receive 600+ applications for 10 nom slots and NoVA MOCs receive 300+. Now, obviously not all of those are highly competitive, but if even 20% are . . . (and the number is probably much higher). Another thing that hurts in NoVA is that it's a reasonably large state and the Senators want geographic diversity. So, even if the top 8-10 candidates in the state were from NoVA, they are still going to select kids from the Norfolk region, from downstate, from Appalachia, etc.

Other competitive areas include SoCal (San Diego, suburbs of LA) and Montgomery County MD (DC suburb) mentioned by Kwade. I've no doubt that certain parts of FL and TX are up there but don't know which ones.

Be careful when you conflate an area like Anne Arundel County or Bethesda with the entire state. Do you really think that the area around Frederick or the Eastern Shore is just as competitive? I can tell you that there are huge differences district to district in NY, California, NJ, etc.

This year, there were over 500 Virginia applicants for 20 senator nomination slots.

I do think Maryland as a whole is competitive across the country, but Montgomery County and Anne Arundel is very difficult. we've lived in both counties and 2 counties are different as night and day. District 8 by far is more difficult.

Maryland has been significantly gerrymandered. I think District 3 is the most competitive as it tends to have the wealthy parts of Baltimore, Moco and Anne Arundel county (with the naval academy included)

Is District 3 Howard County? I forgot about Columbia. I think you are right. I counted Olney and Poolesville area as District 8. You are right the Gerrymandering fight has been going on for at least 5 years and I think it was going all the way up to the Supreme Court. The map makes no sense.

Maybe something else I haven't seen included here is the fact that a LOT of areas that include Military Bases have a LOT of military children. Military children are afforded Presidential Noms by nature of their parents AD service. They usually still go after MOC noms, but if the MOC's coordinate and talk with the academies then it is possible those noms become even more "competitive" as the MOC may grant a nom to someone with a Presidential nom already, therefore making the District more competitive for those applicants without a Presidential nom. Just a thought..:)

If I got a nomination from District 8 in MD, does that generally make me more competitive in the national pool than the average applicant?

San Diego districts are normally very competitive for USNA every year (large Navy and Marine Corps presence) and vary from year to year for other SA's from competitive to very competitive.

CA does have several inner city and rural districts that could be classified as not very competitive for any of the SA's.

Hi District 8 MD residents! I understand why USNA would be extremely competitive for this district. Do you think the same applies to USMA, or better yet USAFA?

I’m MD district 4 (where USNA is) which was the reason why I sought a nom for USAFA because of the low chance of getting a USNA nom. I ended up getting a nom to USAFA.

is any district in NC considered to be a highly competitive one?

thanks
I would have the mindset that any district YOU are applying from to be competitive. You can only control your metrics...so push hard, put your best effort into your application, and sleep well knowing you did all you could to gain a nomination that leads to an appointment. Best to you and your efforts; Keep us posted.

Is District 6 in Maryland very competitive? It’s quite rural, but not too far from Annapolis.
> As a practical matter, unless we have a BGO from the specific District on this Forum, no one can really tell you "how competitive" a particular district. We can talk in generalities about regions, and what attracts a lot of Candidates, but when you get down to the fine details, only someone with actual knowledge of applicant numbers would know. (Even the BGO might not know ..if there are multiple BGO's in the District, then they would only know what they see).
