My parents have been asking what I would like for graduation gifts, and I know typically that most people get things for their dorm, but at USAFA you're restricted on what you can have in your room. What are things you would recommend to ask for graduation gifts?

As a member of the class of 2025, you will have specific privileges that increase each year at the Academy. These rules govern things like a mini fridge or a TV in your room. Personal items are considered "items of memorabilia" and there are limits here. These limits are for room cleanliness as well as having a sense of earned privileges. You can expect to see something like a 4 degree is allowed X number (4 for instance) of items of memorabilia. This may translate to 4 picture frames or a funco pop figure. Expect the number to be very low and surprising. People care less about this as they become an upperclassman, but there is attention paid to it for 4 degrees. Things like a mini-fridge or television are hard to hide in a locked personal drawer during an inspection.

Only firsties were allowed a TV when I was at school and some people may have hypothetically brought one back after Spring Break their junior year. Again, the rules are there and the degree of which they are enforced will vary based on your grade level at the school.

My Mid loves her Apple Watch. She had to wait until after Plebe Summer to use it, but she utilizes it fully.

The only add I have is that it also depends on your squadron - different squadrons have different rules or areas of emphasis so some may be more lenient than others, but Doolie year don't count on much. Of course, these days, with your phones, you have access to a tv anyway.

You won't be able to use these items until after A-day, but an Apple Watch. Maybe a mattress topper and blanket that you can roll up into your trunk, in order to sleep on top of your made bed. I can confirm you will not be allowed a mini fridge or a coffee maker until you become a 2 degree. We gave our son money for graduation.

I say mooch off your parents as long as you can. I didn't classify dorm room "essentials" as graduation gifts. If you don't really know what you need now, ask for money and into your bank account, or gift cards for companies that aren't likely to go out of business, which is really hard to tell these days. Gift cards for COS local vendors. Sheels, Whatburger, Lululemon, etc

Let me drop a big one here: it is POSSIBLE to have a minifridge as a Doolie, but it's very squadron specific. My DD and her roommates strategized which one was going to be doing the asking, and then went up the chain of command. They worked out fridge rent terms but alas, after the winter break they all got new roommates so the fridge went down the hall with former roommate. Again, very squadron specific AND VERY MUCH your DD/DS's ability to appropriately and successfully navigate what's allowed and how to do it.

My son loves his AirPod Pros. Great noise canceling and helpful with online classes.

As a Doolie you can now have a coffee maker! (*Coffee lovers rejoice*) Of course, you can only have it after A-day but that shouldn't be a surprise.

LOTS of great ideas, remember - It's all squadron specific!!!!!

@B52brat - excellent point! Anything noise cancelling that are comfy to sleep with.

@BuckeyeDad20 makes a great point on TV-less era: my DD asked for a projector for xmas and a hammock - during restrictions, they could still go hiking; it seemed everyone had a hammock!

My son also bought a projector for tv, but I'm pretty sure that is considered contraband. My son already owned a set of airpods, but since they had so many online classes, he got a pair of beats over-the-ear, noise-cancelling headphones for Christmas. I hope they don't do online classes this coming year.

This cheered me up, I love coffee and was curious as to how I'm going to make it through Doolie year without it.

My DD after A day had her apple watch, Ipad for watching Netflex, phone and miniature projector and blue tooth speaker. The projector and blue tooth speaker had to be stored in her footlocker. On the weekends they would hang bed sheet to project a Netflix movie and have a movie night.
