I’ve been scrolling around the internet forever trying to see my chances of getting into VMI and I’m hoping to get some solid advice here.
I’m a rising senior, getting ready to apply soon (early decision)
I’m a white female, 3.2 gpa, 1200 sat
I do marching band, and have a high position of leadership in it
I have done rotc for going on 4 years and have held a leadership position in it for 3 years
I haven’t done any sports but I served as the athletics commander for one of my years in rotc and exercise regularly
I work as a lifeguard and take many challenging AP Courses
I live in Virginia and would be the first person in my family to attend college
Please give honest feedback :)

I think you have an excellent chance. Strong recommendation from ROTC and Marching Band faculty advisors will go a long way. Highly recommend a campus visit and personal interview. Good luck!

I visited the campus back in March and fell in love with everything about this school. I plan to do a personal interview shortly after I send in my application. Thank you so much : )

You look to be a solid candidate perhaps look at the other SMC as well -

If band is your thing there is the A&M Fighting Aggie Band, it's world class.

The Citadel has arguably the best traditional military band along with Pipes and Drums - Citadel should be going back to the Edinburgh Tattoo in Scotland in the next few years
I’ve definitely looked into the citadel, but out-of-state tuition is kinda off-putting if I’m being honest lol

I think you are a strong candidate, especially with marching band experience. You mention that "I haven't done any sports" so just want to make sure you understand the physical demands and fitness required for being a Keydet which is why admissions likes to see some participation in sports. In your application be sure to mention you are a lifeguard which will help.

I would add that don’t let the price of admission put you off from applying to ANY college. You never know what kind of financial aid you may be offered. If they don’t offer you what you need you are under no obligation to attend. This advice isn’t just for those looking at military schools but for all college applicants

I’ve been training a lot, running mostly, thanks for the advice

You sound very motivated. Take a look at the VMI physical fitness test and see how you perform. A gym teacher or coach can help you with a training plan. I am touched that you will be first in your family to go to college and you want VMI. Go get it!

you seem to be a strong candidate. My son did not have a sport either but he did drill team with JROTC and they considered that as his sport since it was active and the practiced 5 days a week for 2 hours.

run a lot. then run more. run hills. lots of them. VMI is amazing. best of luck

Hi - I would like to second the advice not to dismiss schools because you think you can’t afford them. If VMI is your first choice and you are in-state, this seems a good fit.

However, if other SMCs or college programs interest you, don’t dismiss them for published costs. College Board surveys indicate that especially students who are first generation make the mistake of eliminating colleges based on published costs. However, virtually no student with reasonably good standard test scores and grades pays the published price - at either private or public institutions. The College Board data indicates the average discount offered at private colleges is now nearly 50%. Many public colleges need to meet their student profile goals. Best of luck.

Maya, congrats on being the first in your family to attend college. That is amazing.
Looks like you have a strong profile for VMI admission. Getting into VMI is very competitive and it's only becoming more competitive each year, but getting into VMI is the "easy" part. Staying there is very challenging. My suggestion before you commit is to research VMI as much as possible. It is a very unusual place, with unusual traditions, and unlike anything else in the country. It also has a reputation for being the toughest military school experience out there! The benefits of being there (and being from there) make it worthwhile, though; somewhat like a big fraternity and a tight-knit family, but again, it's tough as h-e-......, so make sure you really want to go there, and good luck to you wherever you go!
And "huge congrats" again for being the first in your family to attend college! Amazing Accomplishment!
