What are my chances to AFA Prep School?

I am an Airman who currently stationed in Misawa AB. I have been in the Air Force active duty for 10 months, and now im trying to approach the AFA by LEAD program. I have finished everything in my application and now waiting for an interview by my ALO, and my application should be complete. I was born and raised in Viet Nam, so English was not my first. I scored a 640 on math and 430 on verbal for my SAT scores. Though my commander wrote me an endorsement letter and recommend me to the AFA. I am quite worried about my SAT being too low, even for prep school qualifications. (My high school GPA is 3.47 unweighed). So as prior enlisted, rank Airman, nominated by my commander. I actually wanted to attend the prep school because i know what my weakness are, and i want to be better. What are my chances of getting acceptance to AFA or AFAPS?

Hi!

Keep pressing ahead with the LEAD program!!! It's a superb way for young deserving airmen to enter USAFA via the prep school.

Now the part you're not going to like...nobody here can answer your question. While some of us that have been "in the process" can "guess" (and you know that's not a great thing) we can't say "odds are good, chances look great..." because we don't have access to all the information/requirements that the prep school has.

What I will tell you is this: I have seen airmen with higher scores NOT get selected, I have seen airmen with lower scores get selected and not selected. What am I saying by this? It's the entire package that is scored: EVERYTHING is reviewed and valued and in the end, the AF decides "what airmen they want" and they pick them.

Your challenge is to present the finest package you can: CC endorsement is huge; as are the comments of your 1st Sgt, supervisors, your fit test scores, your training reports, etc...etc...it's all valued and valuable.

Best of luck!!!!

I appreciate you replying to my question. Since i already submitted everything in except for my ALO interview, i dont think i cant do much more than wait for their answer in January. I know being new airman and my low scores in SAT wont help me one bit in this situation, but i just wanted to throw it out there and see. Im willing to put time and effort, but sometime even getting that opportunity to prove myself is hard.

You can still retake your SATs and ACTs and have scores submitted to USAFA!! They take up to the January test scores I believe. SO I would sign up for a few of them and get studying! When you sign up, order the practice books and take as many practice tests as possible.

ETA: I just reread your post and saw you are in Misawa. I'm not sure when or how often SATs and ACTs are offered, but you should be able to get that information from the Education and Training Office on base

First off, thanks for your service.

Secondly, by receiving an endorsement from your commander, you know that at least one person thinks you should proceed. Also, it is the Air Force that determines who gets direct entry and who gets a slot at the prep school. You don't get to pick. That being said, press on and let us know what happens.

If you do not receive favorable news, consider getting a practice ACT or SAT book and practicing so you can raise your test scores for a 2nd attempt at AFA.

Best wishes! :thumb:

Airmen actually have the option of applying directly to the Prep School.

HK, I've been down this route. Don't be discouraged. You've already applied so there is not much you can do. If you haven't submitted extra letters of rec then that is something you can work on.

Lastly, you're probably not going to find out in January. Most prior-Es don't find out until late April.

Thank you all for the replies. Though my verbal score is low, i did mentioned to my ALO and mentors that English is not my first. I took a DLPT on Vietnamese to prove that I am fluent on it, and i got 3/3. I wonder if the AFA take that into consideration? I understand that i have to keep up with my classes if i get selected, but i was able to handle AP class and colege classes in high school.
