Realistically, what are my odds of receiving an appointment?

Best ACT Math: 27
Best ACT English: 31
3.56 GPA
Varsity Soccer all through 11th grade (I am currently going into 12th)
Varsity Cross country 10th grade
I coach a Soccer team and I am also a skills trainer for youth soccer.
Top 25% of my class.
Taking advanced classes in all core subjects.

What are my chances? And any advice on how to improve them? Also any advice on how to get into the Navy's prep school in case I don't receive an appointment?

You are automatically considered for NAPS (Naval Academy Prep School) and Foundatiom scholarships (for a post grad year if you don't get selected for NAPS) when you apply.

There are so many factors that come into play that no one can give you a guess as to whether or not you will get an appointment (factors like school competitiveness, your geography, etc). Improve every single area (ESP math) that you can, take challenging classes, improve your leadership, etc. keep improving and updating thoughout the process.

You look like you have a pretty good package. Hopefully you will have outstanding recs to bolster it.

Isn't NAPS only for people that are academically disqualified? The OP's ACT scores and GPA might be too high for him to be academically DQ'd.

I think that's the case too. If you aren't considered for NAPS then the ACT will make you less competitive than those with 30+ ACT math. Of course I'm not saying that you won't get in with those scores, but you would have a higher chance by working on it

I am still working on it. I just took the June test and hope to bring my score up.

Zero if you do not apply. Other than that no one knows. As stated elsewhere on this forum there are many different factors involved in gaining an appointment. Location of applicant, competitive district such as MD, Chicago. If you are here your math will not make the grade. In other states and districts you may be competitive. NO ONE KNOWS. See stick on the first page for what are my chances.
All you can do is put together the best package you can and let the chips fall as they may.

Volunteer? Eagle scout? Boys/Girls State?

If you want a straight honest opinion other than no one knows. My best guess would be you are a little short with the most recent class (2019), but that is just a guess.

Improve, improve, improve. Hire a tutor get the math up to at least a 30 and take the test often. They superscore at USNA and other Academies. Again take the test often. Also teacher rev's and BGO, CFA also are involved.

Finally, Good Luck.

I sent in my preliminary application a few days ago. Waiting to find out if I'll receive an official candidate package

You never know the academic qualification needed in a given year. Also Foundation is not limited to academic disquals. Finally, there is more to the AC qualification than scores on ACT/SAT so that's why candidates are automatically considered for NAPS.

Seems like you're too good for NAPS, but not making the cut for the USNA.

Thanks Phil. You don't know that and neither do the rest of us.

NathanSuz go for it. You have as much of a chance as anyone else applying. As is usually true, many will have better credentials and many will have worse.

This year's NAPS class had attendees with higher Math scores and GPAs. That isn't the whole picture when deciding who goes where. Some needed additional Math, some Chem or Physics. Just do the best you can to improve your application and USNA will decide if you are in, being sent to NAPS, offered foundation, or out for that year.

Could one be academically DQ'd for not having 2 years of a foreign language?

Ask your admissions counselor this question.
http://www.usna.edu/NAPS/Academics/

I did a little bit of research, and based on the looks of this site, NAPS does not have a foreign language department. They only have chemistry, English, mathematics, and physics departments. So I would guess(don't quote me on this) having a lack of one of those courses would result in an academic DQ, but lacking a history course or foreign language course or some other course would not result in an academic DQ.

I know of one class of 2019 applicant that was a fantastic candidate in every way, with math 780 and reading 700, eagle scout, NHS, varsity athlete, ... who did NOT get an offer of appointment. Another fantastic candidate, JROTC, NHS, etc. had a 520 math and 570 reading that did indeed get an appointment. Same district.

This is only to illustrate that you can never tell. Do your best, throw your hat in the ring and see what happens.

Foreign language in h.s. is not a requirement for admission to USNA. Advanced study in a foreign language (i.e., 3-4 years or more) can enhance your package in that it shows long-term commitment to a valuable academic pursuit that isn't required in h.s. and also gives you some language skills that another candidate might not have. That said, if you have high grades in core courses (math, science, English, history), lack of a language isn't at all fatal.

I am going to be a completer in pre engineering my senior year (four courses two basic, two advanced specialty)

Are you a recruitable soccer player? That could be a big bonus. Have you tried taking the SAT? Some kids do better on that test than the ACT(like my kids). It may be worth a try. Like mentioned above, try and get the math score up. Buy an ACT or SAT practice book and just keep taking those practice tests. It helps.
