I'm a junior at a small private school wondering how I stack up against the competition for admission to Westpoint:
  • 4.39 cumulative gpa, 1400 psat
  • High honor roll 3 years, science fair honorable mention
  • Model Congress member 2 years
  • 3 Missions trips (2x Guatemala, 1x Philadelphia), 140 hours community service
    • Activities group leader for second Guatemala trip
  • 3 years Varsity soccer, lettered
    • Recipient of sportsmanship award
  • Assistant Soccer coach
  • 1 year premier soccer
  • Ski club, Cinema Club, chess club
  • Created my own blacksmithing business, held summer jobs and regular dog walking job
  • Regularly serve at my church
Thank you so much for your feedback and help, it is very valuable to me

I'll tell you what, you seem extremely impressive to me.

I agree with bobsnaderz. However only admission would be able to give you a definitive answer. My advice to you would be to not do anything that disqualifies you( drugs, Rob a 7/11 or catch a case of EBOLA). make sure you start practicing the CFA early, ( you can find minimum standards around the website but strive to max) and I'm sure you already do but allow the army LDRSHIP values and West Point's honor code "a cadet will not lie, cheat, steal or tolerate those who do" to deeply resonate in your life. Once again I'm sure you already do that but it's an aspect of the process we should not fail to mention. Wish you the best of luck and God Bless:).

I would say leadership is missing..captain, president of a club. Something you were elected to lead.

Assuming you're highly interested, based on what you sent, I recommend you open a file (deadline for SLE is 3/15, this Sunday!). I'm a district coordinator/FFR, so I'd also ensure that you: A) contact your FFR, review your file and how to strengthen it further, B) apply to ALL sources for nomination and C) ensure you're prepping for interviews and CFA. Consider all the Academies and use their Admissions websites as your sources of information. Good luck! (PS - and good input from A1Janitor and dah19 on seeking ways to increase your Leadership!)

Definitely need to up your game in Leadership. Joining clubs is great, but academies want leaders. Boys State is a must-do.

Thank you so much for your quick feedback! Boys State sounds like something I really should do... I was wondering how selective it is?

Selectivity depends on your location and state. Generally your school will nominate you. However another way is to contact your local American Legion and ask them if they still have any slots. If they do they will most likely have you write a letter to the AL, as well as do an interview. Hope this helps.

In Michigan at least the Boys State people said they wanted about 1250 people to attend last years session but only around 250 people applied so everyone who applied basically got in.

Also, I was not nominated by my school to go nor did I contact my local American Legion post. I just printed off the application online and sent the check in and a month later I got the instructions.

It was a great time and undoubtedly helped my USMA application!

My states Girls State/Boys State is doing interviews right now, so if you're interested, I would contact your AL post right away. Mine took a couple weeks to reply, so the earlier you get in touch the better. Keep reminding them, because mine forgot and now I might not be able to attend at all. Good luck!
