What 'back up' colleges did you apply to before choosing USNA?

Every year, there are tough posts to read - all set to go to a SA, breaks shoulder a week before reporting, all safety nets released.

It all depends on your risk profile. Some count a lost deposit as money well spent for peace of mind. Others wait as along as possible or as they can afford.

The good news is there are a lot of colleges who are still open for applications into the summer, so if need be, colleges can be found late in the game.

My son’s classmate made it through plebe summer at WP ... was doing well academically ... ultimately decided WP was not the best for the civilian career that he wanted.

Contacted the plan b school ... it was more than willing to extend his acceptance to the spring semester and waived all admin fees etc.

I think many schools are ok working with SA candidates.

I applied to VMI, NC State University, and Norwich University Corps of Cadets. I am currently a Cadet at VMI and a Midshipman in their NROTC Batallion of Midshipmen. I think everything worked out for the better, don't discount the Senior Military Colleges. I know I did, initially.

My DD applied only to the USNA and is a current Plebe, class of 2023. Lucky for her all roads led to the Naval Academy. I do not recommend going this route.

I did the same! Only applied to FSU, USF and USNA. I did not apply for NROTC. I also do not recommend going this route, it is quite risky... but it worked for me!

I applied to/was accepted to Embry Riddle, Duquesne, Marquette, University of San Diego, University of Virginia (NROTC)
Embry-Riddle is the best kept secret for NROTC. Private school, excellent STEM majors, small class sizes, small NROTC unit, ROTC-friendly campus. Great place to make your mark while reapplying to the Academy.

My DD has completed the application process for USMA and USAFA, however, his backup schools are TAMU (accepted), Baylor (accepted), Pitt (accepted), Virginia Tech (waiting to hear) and Penn State (waiting to hear). He has been awarded an AFROTC Type 2 scholarship and is waiting to hear from AROTC later this month. ROTC (Air Force or Army) are his “Plan B” (at either TAMU or Virginia Tech) should he not get USAFA or USMA. Plan C is Marion Military Institute (already accepted with a Presidential Scholarship), however, he will attend MMI if he is designated for a year of prep school by either one of the academies.

Woo hoo! My thread has resurfaced! ;)

Now that DS has a Tier 1 NROTC Scholarship in place, his Plans B-E are UCLA, USD, UC Berkley & SDSU.

Still checking the USNA portal at least once a day (me!), but we'll see what God has planned for him. It has been a very exciting year getting to this point.

Almost identical to my son's plan. He too has been accepted at A&M (Engineering) and has yet to hear from VT (likely February). Should hear from AROTC First Board by Christmas.
Nice options!!!
Agree - all excellent options no matter where they end up!

DS has been accepted to Texas A&M for engineering and is waiting on GA Tech and UT Austin. He loves the A&M Corps of Cadets, and we are in-state, so the other applications are pretty academic at this point (SWIDT?) Army and Navy ROTC applications are in.

Back ups for DD are Vanderbilt University and Texas A&M (already accepted)
My DD, now a plebe, (and currently boarding a bus for Philly ^proud dad flex) was accepted to Vandy and A&M Engineering, out of state, as well among others. Vandy was top choice after USNA. Very similar choices. Good luck!!!!!

My plan B is ROTC with Air Force or Navy at either University of Florida or University of South Florida.
