My situation in high school is I have 3 basic level classes each year (track, orchestra, jrotc) and they hurt my gpa which lowers my class rank but the rest of my classes are all advanced (college classes, AP). Will those basic classes hurt my chances? My gpa is 3.6 and I'm going into my junior year.

Track as a class? As in PE or a spring sport?
I don’t see how an athletic ‘class’ would hurt your chances. Same with JROTC, depending on what you do. That should always show some sort of leadership. I can’t answer for a musical course, I never took one, but as well I don’t see how an elective such as that would hurt your chances, just another skill you possess. These are all assuming you are passing these courses.

You're fine. Just keep doing your best. I would say those courses might make you more interesting.

Track as in spring sport and I'm a cadet officer in charge of academics team and kitty hawk air society hopefully these would look good.

May I ask why JROTC is bring down your grade? Are you graded on performance of your job or just academics? If it's grades wise and your struggling with the content being taught try looking up study guides or ask you SASI/ASI for your test back so you can get use to the type of questions asked.

My corps I'm the Command Chief but no matter how well I do it wouldn't affect my academy standing just my chances for being Corps Command next semester.

JROTC is not an advanced class so it barely puts points into my GPA even when I'm getting A's in that class. So an A in the class would give me 6 points (the highest for classes not advanced) to average into my GPA but in an advanced class, an A would give me 7 points into averaging my GPA.

When you become a candidate, USAFA recalculates your GPA, but I have no idea what formula they use. Just keep getting the best grades you can.

I'm not understanding how track is a class...but as others have said - USAFA will recalculate your GPA based on your school profile and what classes you took. As long as you are taking the hardest classes available (and be sure to check the admissions site for the classes USAFA expects and that you have those) and doing well in them, then you are good. Lots of schools don't weight GPAs at all (like mine) - so you end up with 10 valedictorians, all with perfect 4.0, straight A GPAs, but USAFA knows the difference between the kids that took hard classes and those that cruised. Now - if you aren't getting to take something that USAFA expects (per the admissions page), then that is a different problem.

First and foremost, USAFA is looking for young men and women who show the potential to become leaders of Character. Strive for that in all you do, and no matter where your path leads, you will do fine.

USAFA will look at your school profile and compare that to the classes you have taken. They want to see you challenging yourself and taking the hardest classes you can. Make sure you are pushing yourself especially with STEM classes (Math, Chemistry, & Physics). Study hard and excel on the SAT/ACT too. Academics is 50% of your WCS.

As for JROTC - strive to obtain leadership positions in your squadron. It is the same with Track (Team Captian) or Orchestra (First Chair). Train for and rock the CFA. You know what that test is and you have plenty of time to get ready.

Good Luck
