So I have been accepted and visited North Georgia. As far as senior military colleges go, I haven't heard much. Can anyone tell me what they think of NG. The Corp of Cadets program looks as if it has a bunch of achievements. Is this a good school for the Corp. Thanks!

That is one of the schools I am looking at. Im going up in April to check out the campus. As far as the corps goes I here its pretty good. I like it because the whole program is Army (unlike VMI & Citadel). The academics from what I hear though is not at the same quality that the other SMC's offer. Are you in 11 or 12 this year? And if you dont mind me asking, what is you GPA/SAT scores?

My best friend's son in law just finished at North GA...he hated Citadel and transferred there. It's a beautiful campus in the GA mountains. He left for Iraq two weeks ago and is proudly serving our country! I have many friends w/ kids at N Georgia...all have loved the environment.

so far i've been accepted to VMI, the Citadel and NGSCU. NGSCU is recruiting me pretty heavily, but i won't go because they don't have Navy ROTC - they were sort of a backup. however, they offer a deal where if you join the corps, they will only charge in-state tuition whether or not you go.

in terms of academics, my sense is that the Citadel is a bit worse than VMI, and NGSCU is a bit worse than the Citadel. this is just my feeling, so i don't have any proof- but you might check on the US News & World Reports site to compare the ranking of NGSCU against everyone else.

mikemcc,

Actually I am going to be a transfer from Wichita State. I have 70 credit hours. But as far as my GPA goes my college gpa is a 3.1. When I was in high school I did not have to take the SAT because I live in Kansas. But I did take the ACT and got a 25Let me know if you have any other questions... since I sort of have some college experiance as far a a civilian college goes.

Hey ctbrazil, my son considered North Georgia very seriously last year until he was accepted to West Point. I think North Georgia is a very fine institution. The Corps of Cadets there is very buttoned down. They have an excellent academic and military program.

NGC&SU is one of the six Senior Military Colleges (SMCs) in the U.S. Here is a page on its website that lists some of their positives:
http://www.ngcsu.edu/CadetAdmissions/why_ngcsu/index.htm

The student teacher ratio is 21:1.

It has a very high medical school acceptance rate. Their science program is very strong.

They have over 50 majors. If you want to major in engineering, they have a two year pre-engineering program which requires a transfer to either Georgia Tech or Clemson to finish your degree. Acceptance is guaranteed to GT with a 2.7 GPA.

NGC&SU has a unique foreign language program which includes (if you qualify) two years at the Defense Language Insititute in Monterey, CA. This program is described here: http://www.ngcsu.edu/CadetAdmissions/courses_study/dli.htm#DLI

Georgia has designated NGC&SU as their premier leadership college. North Georgia offers a minor in Leadership.

It is near the Army Ranger School mountain training facility. The NG Corps of Cadets does some training there.

Women outnumber men, and civilian students outnumber the Corps of Cadets. (The cadet who gave us a tour really liked the fact that the women live on campus). Because they have more students than VMI or the Citadel, they have more classes in each subject area and more majors.

Another interesting fact about NG is that all the cadets are in the AROTC program - thus all cadets are committed to a military career. At VMI and The Citadel, not all cadets are in ROTC - they are there for the leadership experience, not necessarily for the military experience.

NGC&SU has produced more general officers than any of the other SMCs and this school is not as old as VMI or The Citadel. NGC&SU provides a first rate Army education and has excellent academics.

Do not hesitate to contact the Cadet Admissions Officer if you have questions. We found the Admissions Office to be very helpful and friendly.

i hope you don't mind just a minor correction :)

i don't know about citadel (they have a non-cadet evening school too) but at vmi, all cadets/students are required to take ROTC (can be army, navy, marines, or air force though) for all 4 years. however, it is true that at vmi, not all students are required to take a commission afterwards (in the class of 2007, 53% took commissions though). (at vmi, 100% of the students are required to be in the cadet corps- there is no evening school or other thing like that which accepts non-cadet students).

according to the NGCSU information i just got (as i said, i've been accepted), NGCSU will go to the Virginia Tech / Texas A&M model in 2008 of not requiring ROTC. so that leaves only VMI (and maybe Citadel?) starting in 2008 that requires ROTC of every cadet.

also, VMI has had 265 general and flag officers. how many has NGCSU had? (i ask because VMI's info also claims the most number of general and flag officers as any SMC- so maybe it number of 4-star generals that NGCSU is claiming?)

Hey, I do not mind at all being corrected. Thanks for clarifying the ROTC experience at VMI and The Citadel.

North Georgia does not claim to have more generals that the other SMCs. That was inaccurate on my part - sorry - something I heard during a visit.

I found this on the NG website:
39 Army generals have graduated from our world-renowned Corps of Cadets.
