What does a principle nomination mean?

Easy. If your USAFA portal has the following on it even before you got your nom then you were triple qualified.

Application Status

Your Status: Candidate*
Your Application is: Complete

Medical Status

Status: Qualified

So seeing this before you got a nom is a really good thing? I don't really know what triple qualified means. But, this is what my portal has looked like since before I received my nomination.

Awesome. Thanks Macy! Haha I guess I got so caught up in the details I missed the obvious!

Confusion always occurs because those that apply to other SAs actually get a letter stating they are 3 Q. The AFA does not do that.

3 Q means you met the mins for:
Academically
Medically
Physically (CFA)

It has nothing to do with your nom. or how competitive you are regarding your WCS or MOC slate.

I could be wrong, I'm just a candidate myself, but I don't think so. I think that even with a principle nom you are still at the risk of not being accepted. I don't think anything (except for an LOA) guarantees your acceptance.

Actually, you are 180 degrees incorrect.

In other words, vice-versa.

A principal nomination for a qualified candidate is a GUARANTEED appointment.

No ambiguities, no conditions etc - it is a Federal Law. The principal nominee, if qualified MUST be appointed. The academy has no choice.

On the other hand, a LOA is nothing but a conditional appointment, requiring that some other condition be met before the appointment is granted.

Usually the LOA is contingent on a nomination, but sometimes it can be contingent on the CFA or DODMERB.

A LOA guarantees nothing.

falconchic took the leap that the OP stated it was likely he got it, whereas, the OP actually stated that the Sens know this MOC gives a principal and asked if he got it?

The OP stated he doesn't know if he did.

While I agree with most of what you said, I just wanted to pipe in and say I didn't take a leap, I was qouting from OPs original post--:thumb:

but I also don't want to hurt my chances because I have received unofficial assurances that I will receive nominations from both Senator's and my Congressman (Congressman did not indicate if I was principle nominee, but it seems likely).

Falcon,

My apologies for missing that key passage.

Back on track.

OK, so I'm sure you're all getting sick of my posts/comments right now, but I'm dying of excitement and I'm really hoping it's not all for naught. Does 3Q mean my grades/cfa/DoDMERB are all good to go? So receiving the principle nom and being 3Q as of today means that no matter what (like if I failed all my first semester finals and received all Cs -- PURELY hypothetical) I will get the appointment?

In the short answer... Yes. That's what it means. However; remember, if you failed your 1st semester bad enough, you WOULDN'T be 3Q any longer. Chances are, your gpa could go down far enough that the academy might not consider you qualified. As you say, that is hypothetical. But yes. If you have a "PRINCIPAL" nomination; and you are qualified academically, physically, medically and in all other manners of your application, then you WILL receive an appointment. But I will qualify my statement and say this is true for the air force. Apparently, based on a number of other topics, the army and navy tend to have a whole different procedure for how they give appointments. Best of luck to you. Mike.....

So, if I received both a nomination (MOC) and a LOA, should I still wait until March to be sure? I have no idea if my nomination was "principle" or not, since it did not state anywhere on the letter. I am dying to get the BFE so I can finally stop worrying. It seems like I will have to suffer some more before I can hold the letter of appointment in my hands.

An LOA is a totally different scenario. If you have an LOA, then is doesn't matter WHAT kind of nomination you have. As long as you have one. It could be an ROTC, Presidential, VP, or the #10 slot on your MOC's list. For the air force, an LOA plus a nomination and passing your DODMRB physical, equals an appointment. (The other stuff like academics, leadership, etc... is a given, or the air force academy wouldn't have given you an LOA).
