What does DS mean?

I've been surfing these forums for many months, and I still can't for the life of me figure out what DS means. I know from context that it is used to refer to one's son or daughter, but what does it actually stand for? Sorry for asking such a stupid question...
 
Thank you so much! I always assumed it was some sort of military acronym for an appointee or candidate; never would have guessed dear son/daughter. Thanks again!
