I have posted a couple of times before - but received new information today.
  • DS applied to West Point and Navy
  • Received LOA from West Point in July
  • Completed full applications including DodMerb by Sept 1. Was qualified for Medical and did really well on CFA.
  • Invited and attended Navy CVW
  • No NAVY LOA as of yet.
  • Listed West Point as #1 and Navy as #2 for MOC, and Navy as #1 and West Point at #2 for both Senators.
  • Had is MOC interview on Saturday. 15 people were on list for interviews. Don't know what they applied for.
  • Staff member called my DS this morning and said my DS received the West Point Nomination, Navy and Air Force (he didn't apply there). He had a great interview and the whole committee liked him.
  • She was going to enter everything into the portals next Monday after Thanksgiving.
  • She said she had coordinated with the Senator's office who had my DS down for Navy, so she "pulled" it back to their office so that the Senator can use his nomination for a competitive district. This is a rural district so she coordinates with the Senators to "pull back" the nom. Senator is one of the more "well-known" senators. (you can guess).
Celebrated!!! Yay - this is awesome - opened up application on USAFA portal.

  • Went to a USNA information session tonight. Seemed to get a different picture
  • BG officer asked "was he primary"? "ughh, she said he had a nomination to all three academies" -- she didn't mention slates
  • BG officer - "well if he is the primary for X senator than is probably a lock" - "but getting a nom from a MOC doesn't necessarily mean he will get an LOA/Appointment". Committee has to meet.
  • Another BG officer - if he is listed as Primary for the MOC - that means he will get in.

We can go back to the MOCs assistant and ask - but what would you take from a conversation where the person said "you have the nomination"?

I have no idea what method your senators or congressman uses to select their nominees but most MOCs pick a slate of ten nominees (unranked) and send that slate to the academies. As stated, some will select a “Principal” nominee and then list either ranked or unranked alternates. All of those listed still have nominations but if the MOC selects a principal that is their choice for the open slot at the academy. I know with USMA, if a candidate is the principal and fully qualified they WILL be offered an appointment. I am told that USNA operates a little differently and although they try to accommodate a MOC’s principal selection USNA is not bound to have to appoint them. If your son has an LOA to USMA and the nomination was the only condition of the appointment then I would assume that the “principal” nom is not that important (although nice to have.) Most senators use an unranked slate as their normal method for nominations and simply send a list of up to ten nominees for each open slot. One will be selected by admissions at the academy to “win the slate” and others (if fully qualified) will be placed on the NWL (National Wait List) for selection / review as they fill vacancies in the upcoming class.

Good luck to your son! I think he is way ahead of the game and has done all he can at this point. Now, just wait for the portals to update and reflect the status. There might be a BGO for USNA that can reflect more on USNA’s treatment of principal noms than I can.

this is what is says on the MOC website: Doesn't sound like a "primary" system.

Will I automatically be selected by the academy after I receive a nomination?
No. You will be placed among a select group of nominees, and the academy of your choice will make the final decision. If selected, you will receive an offer of admission (an appointment) directly from the academy.

What if I choose more than one academy? Will I be limited to a single nomination?
No. You can be nominated to multiple academies depending on how well you have competed among this year's pool of candidates. It is also possible to win multiple appointments.

I take it as you have a nomination. You have to compete with everyone else on your slate that got nominations from that MOC.

With Army - the nomination with the LOA means you will get an offer of appointment.

With navy - you are still in the running for an offer of appointment.
