What Happened to Boxing?

Guess you didn't go to WP.....

In PE boxing class you definitely can get paired with a seasoned boxer even when you have no experience at all. In my day the only ones they let out of boxing were golden gloves types. I remember we had a bout where you had to box with your right hand behind your back and only use your left hand. I'm right handed and unfortunately the guy I was boxing was a leftie. I got pummeled. The instructors would take off points if you didn't knock the opponent down with blows. They would basically scream for blood to be drawn (no joke). I saw multiple people get roughed up pretty well in PE. One thing it definitely does teach you is personal courage to stand in the face of direct danger and keep fighting no matter what. I think that's the point of it.

West Point....where its perfectly acceptable to knowingly and purposely permanently disable a USCG cadet with novice boxing skills.....but god forbid harming a mule (or a bird).
“Knowingly and purposely disable”. Total BS.

So you warmly reminisce with Billyb about instructors screaming for blood, and then say my comment is BS? I have no idea what happened to the USCG Cadet at West Point, since unlike the bird incident, it wasn't reported in the news. I'm only holding up the mirror.

No warm thoughts about it, but war is a dirty business. Would you rather learn close combat/danger in the boxing ring or potentially on the battlefield? You do actually learn how to better control the adrenaline and fear. Obviously the boxing instructors don't want anyone getting hurt, but I'm sure it happens.

First, we're not talking about war, we're discussing a PE class. The key word above is "learn". When I learned how to box, the instructor/sparing partner told me to hit him as hard as i could, so I knew how to follow through on a punch. He would never hit back at full force. I later learned to take a punch, when I was ready, after I learned to keep my chin down and my gloves up. If I dropped knuckles, he'd hit me in the head, and say, you dropped your hands dopey. I was a novice, the expert treated me as such.

Secondly, everyone knows a skilled wrestler can overtake any boxer/striker. In close combat, your not going to be throwing fists for very long.

People get hurt boxing, but repeated blows to the head is not accidental. Someone is at fault, and the blame lands primarily on the instructor.

Link didn’t work for me...is the FB post still there? Or removed?

I have to agree that, if the incident that flieger83 detailed occurred as stated, the instructors should have been brought up on charges and should be held personally liable for compensatory and punitive damages in any civil action.

For that matter, the "golden gloves" opponent who delivered the best down in direct violation of stated rules of conduct should also be held liable. In my opinion, even if the instructors ordered him to violate the rules, he had a positive obligation to refuse.

The whole incident, as related, makes me sick to my stomach.

Still is, a jujitsu club at CGA. They just competed recently, from the USCGA Flicker page:

My son was just accepted to USCGA for the class of 2024 and is a boxer. He was disappointed to learn the team has been disbanded. Wish there was some good news regarding the resurrection of the Boxing Program.

Anybody have anything I could share with him?

It won't return during his time at academy.
It's literally starting back up as we speak, believe they had their first practice today. Not sure if its in exactly the same form it used to be, though.

Well as they used to say back in my day, that's about as clear as mud. So, either boxing is completely dead or is starting up now- Got it.

Can anybody give me anything more to go on? I think the existence (or not) of boxing might actually be part of my DS's decision. I suppose I'm being a little bit lazy here...should he just call his Admissions Officer to ask?

If it’s that important to his decision, then yes he should call. Or call the athletic department. Chances of getting an actual academy student, who is knowledgeable about the boxing program, to answer is slim...If it’s important to his decision to attend or not I for sure would go to the primary source.

I am an actual Academy student that knows they practiced yesterday morning, but beyond that I'm not so sure. @TexasAggie204 I can try to find out who is leading the resurgence and see what information I can find for you.

That would be great. I don’t honestly think it’s a huge factor in my son’s ultimate decision. He loved AIM and is scheduled for an AEP in March. Thanks so much for any “insider” intel you can provide.

I contacted a 2/c I know and he told me -

"Right now they route specials to go to classes offbase at a local athletic club. These classes are mostly focused on the cardio and technique aspects rather than the actual fighting itself. No sparing."

As suggested, I would contact the athletic department for a definitive answer to the question.

Have your son call Admissions and ask to speak to Admissions Officer LT Mary (Hazen) Leon (CGA '15) regarding boxing. LT Leon was CGA's first female National Collegiate Boxing Champion.

Highly doubtful Coast Guard cadet was in boxing PE class since it’s a Plebe PE course at West Point and Coast Guard cadet was a 2/C (Junior Cadet) as a transfer cadet.

More than likely he entered Brigades which is an Open Competition where you could be paired with a Golden Gloves boxer. Like any other tournament a bracket is made and you box who you are paired with.
