One of our USNA sponsor mids was in similar circumstances. He spent a lot of leaves with us and was very prudent with funds. Mom worked 3 jobs, father 100% disabled, older brother incarcerated, younger sister pregnant in the teens and raising baby at home. We met the mom just once, drove up day before USNA graduation, drove home afterward, 8 hours. He is still a son to us, and we speak to his mom on the phone every so often. It wasn’t a matter of wouldn’t but couldn’t with her “on-site support.” Her son thrived nonetheless, and figured everything out pretty much on his own. He knew USNA was his ticket to improving his family’s life. He sent most of his mid pay home.
