What happens if you become medically disqualified while at West Point?

The possibility always looms of a Cadet/Mid finding themselves on a battlefield sooner than anticipated.

While not technically deployed as Cadets, several West Point classes were graduated early in time of war. I assume USNA also had early graduations

As did the USCGA where all wartime classes (1943-1947) graduated in 3 years.

And just as I stated, none of them were deployed cadets. Just as none from WP were cadets and none from USNA were mids. They were all commissioned officers when they deployed.

USMMA remains the only academy to deploy academy students during wartime.

VMI Cadets at the Battle of New Market, 1864...:)

VMI is not a military academy. Students have no military obligation upon graduation.

Correct, VMI is not a service academy, it is a military Institute. The entire student body is required to participate in one of the four military branches ROTC program all four years.

During the Civil War, the entire corps of cadets at VMI were called to engage in battle 14 times, and are authorized to carry all 14 battle streamers. However, VMI chose to only carry one battle streamer, from the battle of New Market, where 10 cadets died in battle. The cadets ranged in age from 15 to 25 years old.

If you're injured/health issues at WP it is handled case by case basis. If you are injured/health issues and have not gone through affirmation it can be easier for separation. Many times you will go on "profile" or limited stress until healed. Or you can be "rolled back" a semester, six months, or year.

Case: A recruited athletic cadet was complaining of knee pain. He went to the care facility, he went into surgery and woke up with his leg removed. He had suffered a deep vein thrombosis. He was allowed to finish his education at WP, receive a diploma but was deemed "non-commishable"

Case: A cadet had cancer and could not continue with his education.

Case: (I scratch my head on this one) a third year cadet became pregnant while on Christmas break. She had to pay back her education.

Case: A cadet became over weight during his second year. Failed to maintain his performance and went up to honor boards then separated

Case: Several cadets during their firstie year a few weeks before graduation failed their tape test. They were separated, some enlisted others had to pay back the cost.

Its really case by case and a lot of "ifs" involved.

Correct, it is not a service academy. USMMA remains the only service academy authorized to carry a battle standard, being the only one that has sent its students in war.
