What is a DOD ID?

What is a DOD ID number? I've never heard of it before so I'm assuming I don't have one... Should I simply write my SSN for any documents I need to fill in?

It's a randomly generated number used to replace your SSN for security purposes. I think it's issued as soon as you're entered in DEERS and it will be printed on your ID card. It's the primary number used now for Tricare and all things medical. It is also printed on things like immunization records etc. I would not use your SSN without verifying from someone official.
