Hello all,
I am planning on enlisting in the National Guard in the next few months (split option training) and I am also interested in AROTC at my school as an SMP cadet.
Can anyone give me insight as to what it's like joining as a sophomore when most join as a freshman? How is being an SMP cadet different than a regular cadet (outside of drill obligation)?
I will greatly appreciate any info you guys can provide me.

Your best bet for info would be the Recruiting Operations Officer at the unit you plan to join. I'll leave to others to add the contributions as I am no AROTC expert.

I’d talk with the ROO before enlisting. The ROO “should” then sit down with you and the NG recruiter and make sure your timeline all makes sense. I’d be concerned if this 3way meeting doesnt happen. Don’t believe the NG recruiter that “its all good” with out hearing it from the ROO who is the ROTC expert.

Alright thanks for the advice, I will be sending him (the ROO) an email shortly!

I can only speak from second-hand experience here, but a close friend of mine joined as a Junior and has been very happy this year. He had to complete remedial training this summer to get him up to speed, but by virtue of who is attracted to ROTC, he has been accepted into the battalion with open arms and has excelled. Hope this helps.
