I was stationed at BUMED when we were at the old naval observatory. That property now belongs to the state department. My office was in the main foyer and was once the observatory superintendent’s office. When Matthew Maury was in charge, he was in the office when he wrote his letter of resignation from the USN to President Lincoln. A plaque stating that fact was posted at my doorway. Navy Medicine’s historian gave periodic tours to groups and VIPs and the tours started with lots of information passed just feet from my office.
One day the historian got to the part in his talk where he mentioned Maury and I walked out to take a peek. Without prior planning, he pointed to me and said, “And there he is.” There was a collective gasp from the crowd when they saw me and then a chuckle as they realized they had been duped. Occasionally I would notice a visitor reading the plaque and I would invite them in and recite Maury’s letter to Lincoln (it is a short letter), and then point to my computer telling them “and that’s the computer he wrote the letter on.” The reaction was usually “really, very cool” or similar words quickly followed by a sharp, rebuking stare. BUMED was fun.
