CADETS WHAT DO YOU HATE THE MOST AND LIKE THE MOST AT THE AFA

DO YOU EVER THINK IF I WAS ONLY AT XXXX UNIVERSITY? BE HONEST

WHAT WOULD BE THE ONLY SENTENCE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE TO A 4TH DEGREE AS ADVICE?

HAPPIEST MOMENT AT THE ACAD

WORST MOMENT

Mom ? SHOULD FOLKS BE THERE IN JUNE OR SAY GOODBYE AT THE AIRPORT?

Nobody say the day I pin on as the best, since you are not there yet.

I won't be able to answer the cadet questions, but I will answer the parent question. Whether to be at I-Day or say goodbye at the airport should be the decision of the cadet/candidate. Our son has always been very independent, and wanted to go alone. We took him to the airport in Green Bay and said our goodbyes. It was what he wanted, and needed. It also gave him the opportunity to meet his sponsor family for the first time through the "Bed & Breakfast" program. Other families that I know took their sons and daughters to I-day because their kids wanted them to, and that is what worked out best for them. Listen to your appointee.

I like the people here the most.
I think the athletic department is such a haze IMO.

I really have never thought about another school. This is the place for me.

Advice: Work your butt off before getting here and once here, find time to pursue your interests.

Happiest moment: Either getting my Prop and Wings or earning my jump wings

Worst moment: lots lol. It's character building. :)

I personally liked not having my parents here on I-day, I really enjoyed my B&B family, and still keep in contact.

what do you mean the athletic department is such a haze? and what does IMO mean?

you have your jump wings! niice!! how often do you go up? and what are prop and wings? oh, by the way, my medical just got "qualified" today :). yesterday, i got a little postcard-like letter from USAFA saying they havent received final results on my medical status, but they should get notification early next week. i'm so nervous!! i wonder if my congressman will call me....

The grading in PE classes is far more stringent than it needs to be based on the ath dept standards. Very frustrating.

I did 5 jumps over the summer in the jump program to earn my wings.

Prop and Wings are the insignia for upperclassman that we wear on our flight caps.

Our Cadet flew up a week early in an attempt to aclimatize...(not really successfull), we followed and all stayed at my sisters. I know she wouldn't have wanted it any other way. It was her choice, and parents should respect that choice. Some will want the parents there others won't.
It gave us a chance to have breakfast at the Denny's across from the Academy hotel. We arrived at the AOG building with hundreds of other families, and said our goodbyes. You get that last waive as they get on the bus, and a new chapter begins.
We have talked about it several times, and it is more her growing up in the military sharing the moment. Like promotions, A&D ceremonies, saying goodbye before the deployment. and some of the other mundane things you wonder "Why am I doing this" when it is happening, but when you look back you remember.

I am pretty sure she would say the A-course in Jack's Valley. She struggled there, and it isn't designed for 5 foot tall girls. Then again the 6 foot tall Amazon they pitted her against with the pugil sticks for big bad basic was probably right up there too. her head still hurts from that one. They figured since she is a blackbelt, and good with weapons it would equalize things. Size does matter:smile:

Your daughter is only 5 feet? She seemed taller when I met her, but of course she was standing next to Redhead at the time, so I guess my perspective might have been off.

i assume you like jumping, how often do you go up? is it at your or the academy's expense?

Yeah she and redhead are both on the small side. Opposite sides of the same coin too. A= outgoing extrovert S= shy introvert, kinda funny seeing them together that way.

flyboy, I have not jumped since my 5th. If I had chosen to keep jumping, I would have done it at a civilian location at my own expense. However, there are a couple of programs in the springs for cadets to upgrade from their AM490 class to civilian ratings.

EDIT: And I did LOVE jump. Surreal experience.

Hate: being on probation (now in the past tense!)
Love: The people and the unique opportunities.

"I wouldn't have to go to mandatory breakfast at 0725." (earlier last year). "I wouldn't need to go to a mandatory 1.5 hour workout" (often NOT fun)

WHAT WOULD BE THE ONLY SENTENCE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE TO A 4 DEGREE AS ADVICE?
Make the Core Values your minimum standard--they are a tough challenge and a high calling.

HAPPIEST MOMENT AT THE ACAD
Recognition

WORST MOMENT
Failing my second PFT and worrying about being kicked out. (I had been sick shortly before, and was able to retake it later on.)

Mom ? SHOULD FOLKS BE THERE IN JUNE OR SAY GOODBYE AT THE AIRPORT?

IMO, it is a personal choice. I went alone. We said goodbyes at the airport, and I did the B&B program. (B&B was very good.) Talk it over with your parents.

Pima cannot answer as a Cadet, and since potter doesn't play over here, I can only answer as a Parent.

Best; The doolie day out phone call and email. Like Bullet I have spent more than my share of time away from the family, but it was definitely the shoe on the other foot....seemed like an enternity, but was only 3 weeks.

Parents Weekend, well now it has been ten weeks. The kid may sleep through most of it, but it sure is worth the trip. The meal at Olive Garden or whatever chain place you choose has never tasted so good.

That Prog phone call saying "I made it I'm safe no probation". Knowing you can now place a regular phone call, and won't have to wait until the weekend. Knowing your child will be able to use those passes and get off base for a sanity break.

Thanksgiving break: Finally you get your kid home for a couple days. they will probably spend more time with friends, but what a thankfull dinner.

Christmas break....boy did this take forever to get here. The shopping, the cookies, the family together again.

And then the post recognition call...nothing compares to knowing it is over. The child has become and adult. Even though (She) will always be our child.

Worst....The panic phone calls swearing I am going on Ac/Pro. The I hate the place calls etc...becuase you want to make it better, but they have to do it themselves.
