What is the purpose of this forum?

Now, I'm open for constructive advice:

What exactly would a mission statement provide to this forum?
What return do we get on it?

My purpose in starting this thread was not to argue the need for such a statement; it was to ask if there was one.

As I previously stated, some forum members have repeatedly chastised others for making posts which they claimed were contrary to this forum's purpose. In response to those statements, I went looking for the "official" purpose statement.

Well, I have a better idea......All those who think we need a 'mission statement' or 'vision' or whatever you choose to call it should form a committee and report back to us in 2 weeks on what they have come up with. This isn't a business, so the reference to what a graduate school would suggest is nonsense.
