Am always interested in obscure sports with athletes who compete out of nothing other than the pure love for their sport. They often go right back to their jobs as teachers, salesmen, pipe fitters, etc.

So far this year, my favorite has to be Women’s Water Polo.

Watching US v China.

I hate using the term BadA$$, but in this case it is apropos.

I should say track and field, since DH is a Coach. But, I really enjoyed watching skateboarding! First time event, and those competitors make their boards do things that look impossibly flawless….

I follow TKD since our DS is a 3rd degree black belt and loves his sport.
In the past (before we all scattered to the winds) my best friends and I held opening ceremony parties. We walked through our neighborhood with American flags and mini torches on opening night. We had Olympic themed food and drink and games. We cried. We got goosebumps. We lived for the personal stories.
This time without that was different for sure. But the stories of the athletes and their efforts remain and are inspirational.
I have always watched equestrian events, swimming and gymnastics
And I am not ashamed to say I cried several times watching live competition tonight.
OP, great post. The spirit of the Olympics is and should be alive and well. We can all use the reminder.

Full disclosure, I am an Olympics junkie. I watch almost every event and will be watching for well over a month to get everything in. My favorites are the lesser known/popular sports. I watched skeet shooting and table tennis with my 12 yo yesterday and we commented that this is the only time we watch sports like that. Watching 2 Americans win gold in skeet shooting was so interesting. Loved seeing a couple of 13yos win in skateboarding. I'm in awe of the athleticism needed for water polo among other sports. I don't watch any basketball or soccer during the Olympics. I could watch those players anytime if I wanted.

I've also screamed at the tv or cried at the end of events. I don't get that invested outside of the Olympics but love watching athletes compete for their respective countries.

Curling is my favorite and can't wait to watch it in only 7 months.

@nature boy I remember the Olympics when an American beat the most famous Russian wrestler in Greco-Roman Wrestling. No one ever even scored a point on that guy! Blanking on the names but our guy came from a small town in the Midwest & the whole town turned out in the school gym to welcome him home. It was really cool.
ALexander Karelin & Rulon Gardner!

Rulon Gardner beat Karelin?

At 5:51 they show his high school gym filled with the town.

I am digging softball, as well. Recorded the gold medal game this morning, and have so far stayed away from the news, so I can watch it and wonder who is going to win, tonight. I would have had Abbot pitch, but what do I know?

Olympic softball is awesome. My daughter played in high school. Loved going to softball more than soccer.
