What other college students have to say about the Academy

Speaking of Chinese

My son is minoring in Mandarin at Harvard. The classes are immensely enjoyable because they are largely free of a PC bias (as compared to HS language classes.)

An early translation sentence went something like this, "The horse kicked the old man and the old man beat it to death."

(We don't condone or promote animal abuse in our family.)

The classes are five days a week w/ three emphasizing vocabulary and sentence drill. The instructors who conduct drill speak little English which forces the students to use Chinese to communicate w/ them. It's very helpful.

sealion- my daughter is close friends with a young lady who opted instead of her USNA Appointment - to take her MC ROTC at Harvard - and is a minor in Arabic. The dream for these 2 young ladies is to end up at Quantico together in 2010! Last spring break my kiddo spent the school week up at Harvard hanging out with this young lady, attended classes and discovered just how similiar the academic environment was between the girl's series of classes and her own. We need our brightest and best young people, not just from our Academies but from our top schools to choose military service ...just like this young lady, Fick and Exum.

Hey sealion! Thanks so much for sharing these articles! Yep that's the girl! She and my kiddo are kindred spirits. Hung out together at the same CVW at USNA in their senior year of high school and their close friendship continues to this day. My hubby and I had the privilege of taking her and our daughter ( who AT LAST was home in July for 3 weeks - heck hadn't been home since Christmas) to dinner at the end of the Oceanside pier in CA near our home and in the heart of Marine Corps land!!! Harvard-gal was here in San Diego for her ROTC training. What FUN we 'old grown ups' had with these 2 very focused, very beautiful, very brilliant, very amazing and one day the very best Marine female Officers on this planet!!!!!!!!!!!!!
