I am a junior and Im turning 17, I really want to have a chance at making it into USAFA. My sophomore and freshman year i averaged a 3.4 gpa. But, last semester I had a 4.1 gpa in the 6 classes i took plus one AP and this semester Im taking 2 college classes on top of that. If i contuine my A streak I should have around a 3.75 by the end of the year. Im in the process of getting my private pilot license aswell. I dont do any sports except tennis but i used to do track and cross country and I workout everyday. ACT wise Im about to begin studying and Im wondering what score I should aim for. My question is what more should I start doing to better my chances and strengthen my application.

The ACT score you should strive for is a 36 !! Anything less is not what I would STRIVE for. Stay in shape, pick up a varsity non cut sport like track or cross country and get a varsity letter. Do community service and be involved in leadership activities in all you do. Good luck….

If I cant join a sport in time or achieve a varsity letter what do you recommend I do to show my athleticism.

Almost Spring of Junior Year and you don't have scores yet? You are behind at least some of your competitors for admission. You need to take them ASAP and then take them again ASAP. You are not required to do it at your school or through your school and can take them wherever they are offered.

I agree with the comments above. Join the school tennis team or a club team. Take the ACT (and/or SAT) as soon as possible. I tell my students to plan on three or more times -- test 'early and often'! I don't know your other details, but I hope you are participating in other clubs and organizations, seeking to find leadership positions and responsibilities. A full résumé is needed to compete successfully for an appointment. Also, I have all of my students apply to ROTC scholarships to create a good "Plan B." Good luck!

You should be aiming for full marks across the board on the ACT, but before you invest a bunch of time into that, I recommend taking a practice SAT and seeing which one you perform better on. I took the ACT three weeks after I took the SAT but scored significantly higher on the SAT than the ACT.

You should be aiming for the best package you can submit to admissions. Admissions looks for the whole person. You could hit every mark outlined on their website (a very good resource) and not get in or you could have a bit of a shortcoming here and there and still get in. There are some factors out of your control such as who you may be competing against. As @Academician said, take the SAT/ACT early and often as USAFA superscores. I recommend taking both because often times students do better in one over the other. USAFA doesn't care which one you take.
