I’ve been bingeing on Lucy Thomas all through the holidays. British teenager, perfect pitch, beautiful tone, vocal control, rich vibrato, big range, excellent enunciation. Musicality in abundance. No auto-tune within a galaxy of her. Look for her videos/channel on YouTube over the last several years through her teen years; the ones where her talented younger sister sings with her are especially delicious.

Use headphones/earbuds to hear all the vocal richness.

Goosebumps. I cannot imagine what will happen when she hits her 20’s and 30’s.

Nothing is as satisfying at this old man's age as discovering a new musical artist to obsess about. Even better when it comes from an offspring. DS #2 came home for Christmas and introduced me to this guy, Billy Strings. I have always loved Blue Grass music, so it is very satisfying to see a young kid like him--or Ricky Scaggs or Young Allison Krauss--come along and keep it alive. Coincidentally, last Saturday the WSJ had a nice write up on him:

Billy Strings Found a Life Raft in Music

The singer and guitarist saw his career take off when he started streaming performances from home during the pandemic.

DS #2 came home for Christmas and introduced me to this guy, Billy Strings. You should check out Jerry Garcia Band, heavy Americana and bluegrass roots.

I've been doing so for years and still do. We had a young man for Thanksgiving Dinner who expressed interest in bluegrass music. Both Old and in the Way CD's provided the evening's soundtrack.

When DS #1 was about 2 of 3, Jerry Garcia and David Grisman released this CD. For about the next 2 years that CD was the soundtrack of his life.

… can’t forget the late great John Prine

I am always searching for “Covers” of songs from my favorite popular musicians, and Prine is one the musicians I can’t seem to get enough of … so I’m always searching for covers of his songs …. He is a natural “story teller”

Here is one of my favorite Prine songs titled “All the Best” …. I like the general “Theme” of the song, which to me has the meaning “Conviction, Love and Happiness” …

… generally speaking, In life … Whatever choices you have, and whatever decisions that you make … just make sure that you do it with so much conviction … and like John Prine says … “So much Love, that you just can’t hide”

Here is Prine’s “All the Best” done by Prine himself, and one of my favorite covers of the song done by the “Michigan Rattlers” … Zac Brown’s cover is too “Somber” for me …. I like upbeat 😎

So, on the recent 3rd year anniversary of Rush's Neil Peart's untimely death, I revisited the US Army Band "Pershing's Own" tribute to him (ironically, not a drum to be found). Peart was a prolific writer/lyricist, in addition to drumming GOAT. These soldiers too are extremely talented. Thought this was cool (and moving) when I first saw it nearly three years ago and I go back to it from time to time.

Oops- didn't mean to let this die out. Maynard Ferguson's Birdland and Sousamaphone by the Riot Jazz Brass Band have been my picks lately. The Youngblood Brass Band has caught my ear lately as well, mostly thanks to a song played by my school's steel band ("Brooklyn"). Super cool group, fun music.

Right now, reading, and listening - with my “serious” headphones - listening to a playlist with Stjepan Hauser, a Croatian cellist known professionally as “Hauser,” who is also a member of the 2Cellos duo. He and the dup both cover a wide range of songs and styles, movie themes, popular songs, etc.

Look for Hauser’s “Wicked Game” video on YouTube (visually very cool as well), or the 2Cellos video of “Schindler’s List” theme (goose bumps).

No doubt I’ll be an outlier, with eclectic and varied tastes developed from college radio station DJ days through several decades on the planet. All day today I have been listening to world music/nuevo flamenco on the big surround system as I’ve wrapped presents, written Christmas cards, made up lists of needed items for last rounds of holiday baking.

The playlist: Strunz & Farah vintage stuff, Armik’s latest, Gypsy Kings and Jesse Cook on his Felipe Conde guitar. I developed a love of flamenco while stationed at NAVSTA Rota, Spain, and would attend outdoor festivals where the music started late when it was cooler and you stayed up all night. People would get up and spontaneously dance or do the off-beat syncopated clapping.

Tomorrow in the car as I drive mids to the airport I’ll probably have Shania Twain and Joan Jett for an energetic mix.

I look forward to exploring what other people are listening to. Thank you for starting this thread!
