What to Bring as an Incoming Freshman...

Compression shorts

Our son brought white compression shorts last year, and also brought along his soccer cleats. Left his cellphone & charger with a 3 dig he knew, who got it back to him for Doolie-day-in. We've purchased white compression shorts at Sports Authority, Big 5 Sporting Goods. Watch, sunglasses - we sent them after Acceptance, but their use is definitely on a squadron by squadron basis. They will also determine how often a Basic is allowed access to cell phones.

I'm confused (again). Can cadets wear black compression shorts or white compression shorts or does the color not matter?

I made a text to the hill and asked my cadet this question, he responded white. the other person has a cadet from 2013 who got to wear his black ones. there are no gurantees that you can wear them as it is a up to the cadre if you can or cannot. your best chance of keeping them and wearing them in my humble opinion is white.

in all honesty, if I could re-do basic training I would have brought a superman shirt or something ridiculous. Common knowledge is that you want to stay as hidden as possible during basic, but eventually the cadre will find you and they will make a fool of you. Sure you'll get beat extra hard, but as long as you keep up and persevere, the cadre will have a hidden respect for you. Also they'll talk to other people in your freshman squad about what you did and when you enter the squad, people will know you (a good thing!). Going through it, I wish I could have made it more fun. Honestly, the preppies had an advantage in that they know not to treat basic too seriously. They never once, in their fooling around, ever gotten us in trouble (at least in my squad).

Take a risk.

answer to white compression shorts

Tightly rolled, I hid mine in my boots in my backpack. They do not explicitly go through the backpacks unless you give them reason to.

Also, make sure the iseam is not super long b/c they will stick out from under the pc gear shorts. (I recommend less than 8 inches, I believe underarmour makes them) Also a good idea to get them to prevent chafing from the new ABU pants that are pretty rough material until washed.

Compression shorts were a life saver, especially in Jack's valley with all the dirt. I recommend even girls get them. They prevent chafing and excessive sweating.

This may be a silly question, but are sneakers issued to cadets? I find it hard to imagine that they would allow everyone to wear different, non-uniform sneakers.

Sneakers, even shower shoes

Yes, sneakers are issued. Shower shoes also.

A question about other things incoming cadets can bring:

How about suntan lotion for those fair-skinned like my son?
And what about a camera? I know during BCT they won't be allowed to
have one, but what about after A Day in August?

This has been one thing I'd been wondering off and on as I've read through this whole forum. I wondered about the time available to apply it in the AM. I would think it would be especially important at AFA because of the altitude.

I don't know about lotion but you could try sunscreen but they will just lock it up with the camera it's best just to mail him those things right before and I do mean right before A-day. The other post that said time in the AM with everything I know there is no time.

Sun screen is provided and readily available during BCT -- and particularly during Jack's Valley.

civi's for church

We have been told only bring the clothes on your back, what about for church services, and are there services during BCT?

Cadets I know had to wear uniforms to church until recognition. So during BCT as well.

During basic, you'll have the opportunity to go to church every Sunday after breakfast and every Friday night after dinner. During first beast, you're "flow controlled" from meals up to the chapel, and then have a bit more than an hour to sit down, relax, and enjoy the service. I can't speak for the other services, but all the Protestant services during Beast were contemporary style services. If you choose not to go to church, your cadre take you back to your room where you're allowed to sit down and relax, write letters, etc.

During second beast, if you want to go to church your cadre will take you up to the drill pad. Chaplains with signs for each religion will lead you to wherever your service will be held.

During basic, you wear whatever uniform you were already wearing (usually ABU's, but PC gear if you are injured) to church. During the school year prior to recognition, you can either wear UOD (currently ABU's on Sundays), or blues. :thumb:

The Instructions to Appointees booklet says that we are encouraged to bring molded cleats with us to BCT. Is this something new this year? From everything else I have heard, in previous years cleats were not allowed.

I'll write the paragraph that I'm getting this from:

You are also encouraged to bring molded cleats with you to the Academy. Many intramural activities are played outdoors and the use of molded cleats will allow you to maintain your footing. Only molded cleats are authorized. Do not bring screw-in, metal, or single toe cleats as they pose safety hazards to other participants.

Molded cleats have been recommended for years (NOT metal cleats). They are optional.

I've just seen (from some fellow doolies i met on facebook) that some people have pre-ordered their own boots. is this recommended?

And just to be clear. We just bring our paperwork and the clothes we have on, and...what else then? Phone gets locked up, i know, but what else is there?

No need to bring boots this year. This topic has been discussed many times. Do a search if you want more information.

There should be a checklist in one of your packets. Just bring what you are told.
