What to bring for Indoc

Hello everyone.

I have been a part of this forum for only a few months, but I have found it to be the most extensive source of information regarding KP.

I will be reporting as a plebe candidate for the class of 2019 this June.

I was just wondering what I should bring of my own (like personal clothes, school supplies, etc...). I have the required items, I was just wondering if plebe candidates bring extra personal stuff.

Thanks in advance for any input, especially from current mids or recent grads.

First, Congrats on your appointment and welcome to the KP family. You should have or will receive a logging in book and it will give you specifics of what to bring. The logging in book will also tell you to order the kit from the NEX which will include USMMA t-shirts, athletic shorts, etc. Based on last year you will need to bring yourself, the clothes on your back, specific color underwear/socks, towels/washcloths - think white and only white, etc. You do not want to bring too much more than what is listed...you have to lug it around and what you will bring is going to get a bit heavy with all of the fun stuff you will be doing...run here...run there...get yelled at...etc. Some parents ordered the kit from the NEX and also ordered the towels/washcloths, underwear and it was included in the Kit and is delivered to your spacious suite in the barracks. If you bring your own towels (bulky) etc you may want to consider those space saver bags where you vacuum the air out and they get compressed.

Again, based on last year, bring Black and only Black pens 3/4, bring self addressed stamped envelopes with some paper so you can write your parents - you will write your parents - this is your new form of social media.

I trust you have joined the Class of 2019 facebook page and your parents have joined the Parents Class of 2019 facebook page, both of these are closed so for the most part, nobody will be able to see/view them. You can ask some/most/all of your questions there and so can your parents.

Again Congrats and welcome to the KP family and enjoy the ride...think roller coaster...fast paced with ups and some downs and before you know it you will be recognized next year.

BuckeyeGuy, Thank you for replying!

I appreciate the info. As a matter of fact, my parents and I have joined the respective groups, and they have been extremely helpful as well.
I had one question though: should I bring any school supplies such as notebooks, paper, etc.... or not?

I am extremely excited for this new adventure! As always, any guidance and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I don't remember if my DS did, but I truly don't think he brought notebooks and school supplies except black pens. Read the logging in book, it will be your guide. Purchase the Kit through the NEX it will have most if not all of what you need.

You asked for suggestions, I have never been through indoc, so I can only tell you what I heard from my DS and saw when he reported in... keep your nose clean, keep your eyes and ears open, and your mouth shut during indoc unless you are spoken to directly...yes sir/mam, no sir/mam are pretty safe answers - you will get yelled at probably more than once - get over it fast...

Again, congrats and best of luck

- I wouldn't bring anything I can by at the NEX, it's not worth the effort to lug it around with you.
- As for civilian clothes other than the ones on your back ... one more set at most. You won't even have a use for them until acceptance day and your parents can always bring some with you if they are visiting so again, why lug them around.
- There are only four appropriate responses during indoc (all are also applicable to Ma'am)

1. Yes Sir
2. No Sir
3. I don't know Sir
4. I will find out Sir

- Know who you are talking to. Female DIs do not appreciate being called Sir
- There is no such thing as Sirs or Ma'ams ... It is Gentlemen and Ladies
- Look at them when speaking but don't make eye contact. Learn how to look "through" them and focus your eyes behind them.

I seem to have used "No excuse, sir/ma'am" a time or two as a response. . . . Ahh, the joys of Indoc. . . It was a year or so before I uttered a word without being spoken to after Indoc. . . .

You're right, It was "No excuse" and not "I don't know".

Congratulations!!! Enjoy your shortened summer, stay healthy and safe, get into reasonable shape but please make sure you have some fun, as from the time you report until the end of the first trimester and beyond is a fast paced, and for many tough and longer than it looks on the calendar grind.

I agree with everything above:

a) don't bring too much extra stuff, especially what you can buy at NEX
b) bring the FULL list of stuff on the logging in book list
c) pre addressed and stamped envelopes or post cards you can quickly jot notes home to with - your family and friends will want to hear from you while you are in the "blackout period" and it will also prompt them to send you notes which can be helpful to you as well...

Also given our experience with our son one item that you can or at least back in 2009 could bring extras of were/are compression shorts (underwear) and athletic socks. You really can't have enough and by the time Labor Day rolls around you'll likely be ready to toss a few of your "originals" in the garbage, especially if you tend to sweat (not a bad thing in the humidity on Long Island in the summer) they are indeed useful.

For school supplies you can get them at the NEX but if you are frugal they cost more there than at say WalMart - that said as classes are getting ready to start if you have a nice team leader, etc. there are ways to give an upperclassman a list and the money to buy that stuff off campus for you or you can have it sent in a care package from home after Indoc as classes are starting - I would not bring extra school supplies other than what is on the list in Logging In when I report.

If you are playing a fall sport, I also recommend you contact the coach and ask what you should do about sports supplies and gear on reporting day if they haven't already reached out to you with those instructions.

Again Congratulations and Good Luck!

One thought on socks/shoes ...

Not so much for indoc as for after, I suggest black sweat/athletic socks for wear with the uniform. They are so much nicer on your feet and your roommate's nose. I also preferred leather shoes for the same reason. Once you get a good shine on them, its not hard to keep them polished enough for daily wear.

Polyester socks and corofram shoes are a recipe for disaster if you ask me.

Compressions shorts were packed and useful.
DS requested Compression socks so we ordered some and sent them.

Thanks for the input from everyone!

I have read the logging in book in its entirety, and I have also ordered the plebe kit from the NEX.

A little off topic, but I was curious about the food at Delano Hall. Does anyone know what it is like nowadays?

^^^^^ What Heyriddle said is spot on only I would make it 2-3 extra shirts and 1-2 extra shorts - have the NEX include it in your Kit and it will be delivered to your suite at the barracks

We mailed additional items after indoc, also took items with us to Parents Weekend. Best wishes to the Class of 2019 and Families!!!

Other than extra underwear and socks for males ( I presume similar for females), I would not bring much more than what "logging in" book says. You will "stand out" if you have more "stuff" than anyone/everyone else. Besides, your parents will want to send you stuff that you may want

Thank you for all the advice. I have ordered the extra set of PT gear. I also have two pairs of white running shoes for Indoc.

Since the replies to this post have been so informative, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what life is like after Indoctrination, more specifically the clothes we will be wearing; we will only use the running shoes for PT, correct?

You will be in uniform for classes and PT gear for lounging around. Basically the only civilian clothes you will have are the ones your wore to Indoc.

When granted Liberty, you have to be in uniform when you are within a 50 miles radius. So, when you venture into NYC...uniform.

DS had weekend Liberty much more often than we expected. It depends on the company and who is in charge. One time he donated blood...Liberty. If you make honor roll...Liberty.
