My son in law is a 68W line medic currently deployed in the sandbox.

Thank you! Sorry about asking all of these questions. Believe me I have done a lot of research but just some things don't make complete sense to me so sometimes I hair like to get a second opinion. Sorry about that.

What is a line medic or a unit medic?

Wow (gokings814), that's a bit rude.

Ask away! I'm sure there are plenty of folks out here who
will happily answer your questions, or point you in the direction you need to go! Nothing wrong with being informed (especially since not all "Google" searches yield correct information).

Thank you so much. And yes, most of my google searches give me either something that I'm not even asking or something that I have already read 50 times. It's just easier for me to ask on here since most of the people on here answering have actually experienced the things I am asking about. Google only goes so far.

If you can't ask questions about the military, on a MILITARY forum...just saying. Keep asking and finding your answers!

Well I was thinking that a medic was in the medical field! Is it not? And if I decided to go to college and then enlist as a medic, how many more years of schooling after college would I need?

Good luck to you. Hopefully you take an initiative to do some actual research on your own or be an adult and talk to recruiters instead of being spoon fed and a smart ass on the forum. No hurt feelings PM's to me needed either.

I'm sorry if I came off as a smart ass in any way. I think it's just the way the text sounds. I would never disrespect anyone. And I'm not trying to be spoon fed or anything like that. It's just that Google only goes so far and I just want to get some second opinions on my research. I have researched a lot but sometimes I get false information or different information that contradicts the other websites. I didn't mean to offend anyone I just thought I was able to ask questions

Diampe,
I don't believe anyone is offended. It is simply that your questons are so rudimentary and indicate that you wish to be spoon fed or that you are a "troll".

It is a forum for service academy and other officer commissioning programs. It is not intended to be a source for enlisted information.

Then convey that in the reply. Suggest the person seek an alternate forum...OR, don't reply. Only the user is control of what they opt to read. Being rude and mean is not necessary. So now, I follow my own advice.

Mdog, I'm sorry if I came off harsh, but I don't believe I was rude. The OP's questions made it clear that she was looking for fundamental info.

Accordingly, I provided decent links that would allow the OP to secure the basics of what a 68w does for a living and that it is an enlisted job unlike RNs and MDs who are officers.

You say you want to be a flight medic in the military. You say you want to go to college. I would ask if you plan to stay in the military just for your commitment and then return to civilian life, because you don't have to do college first. They are saying a flight medic is someone who is not a military officer. They are enlisted. I don't believe there's a rule saying that someone with a college degree cannot enlist instead of trying to get in as an officer. If you want to be a flight medic, explore the idea and information behind enlisting, trying to get that job, and becoming the best medic you could be. Once you leave the military, then you could go to college (GI Bill?) and you would have great training to get either an associates degree or bachelors degree in nursing. Don't go for LPN because jobs can be very difficult to get and don't pay well. You would want to go for RN. Associate degree, Bachelor degree, or masters degree. You would also have good experience in the foundation to start on the role of physicians assistant. They do have flight nurses in the civilian world. You can work on having both of your dreams, but maybe you need to put the cart before the horse, enlist first, then go to college. Some do get military scholarships for nursing but my understanding is that is getting harder and harder to obtain. And even then I don't know if you would end up being a flight nurse in the military. Chances are they don't send the officers out there to do that but only the enlisted go up.

I hope I didn't confuse you more with my rambling

Wow (gokings814), that's a bit rude.

I just have to ask, what exactly is rude about that response, The OP is all over the place, has asked questions that were answered only to ask an even more basic question. When told to do some research the only answer is that the google answers are confusing, not quite sure how that happens.

The OP has been told to talk to a recruiter, doesn't seemed interested. So yes, the OP is looking to be spoon fed answers. Back to being rude, that 's quite humorous, a high school ROTC applicant thinking that was rude, I truly hope you know what you're getting yourself into if you make it through to the Military.

The best advise for the OP is to visit with an enlistment recruiter, Don't make decisions based on the internet, or random forums, talk to them in person, face to face and get your questions answered.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone by asking too many questions. I wasn't intending to be spoon fed by any means. I just thought that by coming on this forum, I would get a second opinion or more clear answers than what I was getting on Google. Google doesn't always understand what I am asking. I have done so much research on this topic believe me! I have such a drive to become what I want to be. Again, I'm sorry if I offended anyone. I didn't mean to make anyone mad. I just wanted more clear answers than what I got on Google.

There has been some good advice on here. Stop apologizing and ask detailed questions. Bottom line... Do you want to be an officer or enlisted? That should be your first item to tackle. If the only job you want is medic, then that is enlisted. Go talk to the recruiter and ask about enlisting. Understand the commitment, pipeline, GI Bill, duty station, etc. After your enlistment you would eligible for the GI Bill to go to college.

If you want to be an officer, great, research ROTC. Realize medic is off the table then. There are some other medical related possibilities as an officer but they are very rare, I would count on them. If being an infantry officer or tanker sounds horrible, go talk to your recruiter and enlist. If you want to be an officer to lead people and possibly pay for college, then ask us some detailed questions showing you researched.

Who said I am the applicant?? Actually the parent and was perusing the site to get information because my son showed it to me. Know what "you're getting into if you make it through the military?" Talk about humorous...Father, husband and eldest son are USNA grads. Retired FOUR Star Admiral/36 years, retired Captain/27 years and Active Duty LTJG. Second son is an Active Duty Army Flying Warrant, third son commissioning USMC at VMI grad next May and youngest son already accepted to VMI and pursuing Army ROTC. And your background? Believe me, we know ALL about the military. I thought some responses were rude, including yours. Going to recommend to my son that he rely on his family experience and legacy for information, not this website. Best to you.

Hopefully they pass on THEIR experience in the military to the kid so he gets an idea of what life is like, because I can assure you (just like JCleppe, someone who actually served his country) what you think is rude is a joke. Disagreement (in this case all of which has been helpful to the OP) does not make something rude, being a proactive self-starter is beneficial to success in this line of work and the OP hasn't demonstrated that, which is why various posters may seem "rude."

This has become laughable.

No no, I think you need to re read what I posted. I said "THEIR" experience, as in THEY served their country.

Don't worry, I live through the uniform I put on everyday and the soldiers I lead. What do you do?

I'll even simplify it. You can't trash someone (in this case JCleppe) on service experience when you have none and they do. Nobody cares how many 4 stars you know, your experience is yours alone, nobody else's.
