What to expect at the AFA.

I'd recommend the ski club to help you get away when you need to! Other good clubs I've heard about are the paintball club, martial arts clubs (judo TKD-traditional, TKD-olympic, Aikido, etc.), and for upperclassmen, my favorites, the swing and blues dance clubs. :)

Do they have a photography club? I just got a brand new Nikon D60 with an 18-55mm and a 55-200mm lens kit for Christmas. I love taking pictures and if I get appointed, I just know I would find a ton of places to take pictures in and around the Academy.

*Edit* Also when would I be able to have my camera if I was appointed? I have a really cool idea for a photo project to document my time at the Academy if I do attend.

This also is exactly why'd I'd like to paint at AFA. To document the stay and capture the scenery.
...if I attend.

let's see, bag, roof, pop, food, lost, can, and who knows what else. As for downhill skiing, I only avoid it because I can't do it. I tend to bomb down the tiny hills we have here, so I fear more difficult slopes with trees. A paintball club, that sounds fun.

Does anyone know how competitive the cadet jazz band is? When will I be able to have my instruments at the academy? Are there practice rooms?

Thanks

You can have a camera as soon as BCT ends. Not sure about a photography club, but plenty do that type of thing here.

I would wait to get new ski equipment until later in the semester once you're sure you will be staying. ;)

Keystone, Breck, Loveland, Winter Park, Copper, and A-basin are within 2 hours of the Academy. Vail and Steamboat are a bit further.

A lot of this thread has been discussing the various activities available at USAFA, but I have to wonder: how much time do you actually have to do all these things?

Easy answer: it depends. ;)

I always found time to do what I wanted. If you get yourself on a probation, fail classes, etc. that significantly lowers your ability to do that kind of stuff. Again, this place will be what you make it.

It seems like at the clubs at the academy are not posted on the website.

Since we are on the topics of clubs, is there any type of theater club?

Yes, Potter helped out with the "Kiss Me Kate" show last year, at least I think that was the nameof the show.

In one of the other threads, some were asking about IC's and some of their benefits. Clubs and spare time is definitely NOT one of the benefits of an IC. Most times they don't have time to join any of the clubs. And while in season; just about all their time is taken up. That is one thing my son does sort of miss. However; sports for him has always been his passion. So as long as he stays on the team, it's like a club. Sort of. But I know he'd love to have the time to go snowboarding and such.

Do they limit what type of camera they let you have or does it not matter? Also are there any restrictions on what you can and cannot photograph?

No camera size limit to my knowledge.

There are some restrictions for pictures.

WOW the USAFA sounds even more awesome now that I've read this thread!!! :bump8ls:
