What to expect at the AFA.

Thank you. I appreciate the support. Nice to hear from a girl's mom sometimes.:thumb:

Many, many years ago when I was about 12. My older brother took me to a resort called "Keystone". They had a Black Diamond run called "Go Devil". I had only been skiing a few times befoer at A-Basin and Loveland. Long runs, no moguls or hairy turns. Well he took me up the chair to the top of "Go Devil", and promised me everything would be fine. He would ski about 50 to 75 feet in front of me and wait for me to reach him. Well that lasted about ten minutes. He turned a corner and I didn't see him again for the next four hours. When I reached the lodge he was inside enjoying himself. Brothers!

That's how I learned to ski.

mmm Keystone. Go to Winter Park for some real moguls or Copper for some real moguls + trees! lol.

Just once I think. You have roommate(s) for your 4 degree year then get a new one the beginning your 3 degree year and keep the same roommate till you're done.

how many times do you switch room mates at USAFA and when does this happen

Just once I think. You have roommate(s) for your 4 degree year then get a new one the beginning your 3 degree year and keep the same roommate till you're done.

I am not sure exactly how it works but my D's experience seems to be a switch at semester of 4° year and again at semester of 3° year (with summers an anomaly of some kind as well) ... I believe she mentioned that she has the same roomie next fall that she had this spring so perhaps from now on she'll be stable? Don't know for sure how they do it and it might be squadron specific.

I am sure a current cadet can provide more insight on this one.

you have one in basic.

probably get assigned a new one after basic for 1st semester

maybe be allowed to choose your roomates for 2nd semester

summers you'll most likely have a new one every few weeks with each different program

get a new one when you move to your new 3dig squad

if you like them, you may keep them; if not, you may change a few times over the next 3 years. not to mention all the summer programs when you may have different roomates.

so, in short, often.

Oh that's not too bad. I thought you'd have to change them every semester until graduation-this seems less laborious and hectic.

My experience:

Had one roomie for BCT.

Chose two different people (voluntarily) for 1st semester.

Switched one of those 2 out with my original BCT roomie for 2nd semester.

Got a new room mate when I switched to my 3 dig squad. Except for my semester at group staff, I've been with my same upperclass roomie ever since.

4 dig year depends on your squadron, mine let us choose. As an upperclassman, you can keep your roomie all 3 years if you both are in the squad and choose to room. If you don't like your roomie every semester, you could switch every semester.

Understand you will most likely move rooms almost every semester though.

Hornet it has been many years and when I was your age Keystone was the cool place. If you wanted real moguls A-Basin had an almost vertical set that scared the sox off me. Still my lovable brother taking me to the top of Go Devil and sayin don't worry about a thing brings up trust issues to this day.

Hope the effects of the weekend have worn off and you worked it all off. Potter is in Texas (randolph). Gets to do the WSO training thing in a T-1 on friday. Next week maybe the Texan, and hopefully the T-38 the week after that. She cleared her flight physical today. Was afraid she would neeed a waiver for her weight and height LOL...She is gonna meet up with uncynical while she is there too.

Hope Florida had been fun.

Keystone is still great, but getting expensive, literally, by the year. They are trying to amp it up to be another Vail or Aspen, only smaller. While the Liberty Pass is a great deal, I really enjoyed the Patriot Pass to Copper/Winter Park. I have yet to go to A-Basin, but I've heard stories of Go Devil! :)

I recovered, fortunately, by yesterday. 5 of us rented a boat and went tubing for 3-4 hours in the inlet. Had a great time. The CGOs and the contractors here have been a lot of fun and we're making new friends! Also learning how small the AF is.

Sounds like Potter is having a great time! I'm jealous she gets to see UNcynical, I didn't get to see her this year like I have before during graduation. Hopefully we'll get some F-15 rides here, keeping the fingers crossed.

Hornet and Hneedle are very accurate with their description of room mate changes. And it's pretty much like that for everyone. My son room mate schedule was:

1. BCT him and 2 room mates:
2. 1st semester after BCT, new room (Into the squadron) and 2 new room mates
3. 2nd semester, new room and 2 new room mates
4. This past Saturday, moved into his summer room with just 1 room mate (2 man room)
5. After 3 weeks of CST (Combat Survival Training) and SERE (Survival Evasion Resistance Escape) training; he will put his stuff in storage and come home on leave. (Summer vacation for 3 weeks).
6. After summer vacation, he will go back to the academy and move into another different room with a new room mate for the 3 weeks he is doing "Soaring" and "Global Engagement". (Soaring is flying gliders, and Global Engagement is practicing "Deployments and wargames" (Lack of better definition)
7. Upon the end of Soaring and GE, school will be getting ready, BCT will almost be over, and he will move once again with his NEW room mate (Which he already knows who it is), into his NEW squadron; which he found out a couple months ago.

So there's 7 room moves the first year. After that, if you and your room mate can put up with each other, you'll basically just move out during the summer while on vacation and possibly during BCT. If you go on OPS (Visiting a REAL Base) and possibly an immersion program, (Visiting a foreign country); you could possibly move out at the end of the school year; put your stuff in storage; take off and not be back until the school year starts; and move back into your room. There's a lot of possibilities. That's the best case scenario. But the first year, expect 7 moves from BCT until the start of your 2nd C3C school year. After that it calms down quite a bit. Have fun.... Mike......

It actually does sound like a lot of fun. A lot of the upperclassmen I met during orientation were awesome people. I think I'd like doing that and really get to know people better. I'm guessing it would be advised that we don't bring lots of stuff into the room (if allowed) freshman year because we'd be lugging that constantly.

edit: I CAN'T WAIT 21 days!

Well Hornet just heard from Potter. She got to use the F-15 simulators today. They did a 4 ship of F-15's look for a 4 ship adversary. Friday she gets a T-1 ride. Sounds like she has been having a great time at Randolph.
