What To Watch As A COVID-19 Escape

Is Greyhounds out? As a Destroyer Man I’ve got to see it.

Wife and I watched Gretel and Hansel last night. Terrible movie.

We finished our full “Homeland” binge earlier this week, 1-2 episodes/night.

Now watching “The Americans” and “House of Cards.” We loved the BBC version of Cards several years ago, and enjoy the central character breaking into direct-to-audience comments. For trivia buffs, that is called “breaking the fourth wall.”

In respect of DD2, may I suggest Avatar, the animated series, NOT the theatrical movie. She considers it the best anime series she has watched.

I am going to give a strong second to this. The original Avatar animated series is a Looong and complex story. The first -3 or 4 episodes felt a little like a kids cartoon, but the story does take off and gets very involved. I remember my daughters watching it and DW and I gradually becoming interested to the point that the rule was the kids had to give mom and dad a shout out when it was on.

FutureAD, there is a continuation of Avatar. Its called 'The Ledged of Kora. Its very different but also very good. A little pricey on Netflx and Apple TV, but the full series (four years) was available on DVD from amazon for $15(?) arrived 2 days after I ordered. Both DDs and I binged it before USNA DD went back USNA.

I got one of these and fired it up last night. Very nifty. Double-wall stainless steel. Like a gigantic penny stove.
Fun to watch.

Our P2B got me watching Space Force, binged the 1st (and only available season) this weekend. Hilarious, absolutely loved it. May rewatch it. Very well done mix of humor, sarcasm, witty jabs at all political sides, and they manage to squeeze in some emotion and humanity regarding relationships.
Reading The Good Shepherd by CS Forester. The pending movie The Greyhound is loosely based on the book. Very intense Captain.

Also, USNA had good one hour live video regarding plebe summer last week. Very positive and upbeat. Son was encouraged. Then, our state club had a zoom meet and greet in lieu of a bbq for incoming plebes. It was great, well done and very grateful to have the club and the support. Although he was discouraged to learn that one thing that has been cut from Plebe Summer is the private showing of the new Top Gun. Bummer. Dang Covid.

Not sure if I could call this an escape, but Amazon Prime has a series of history lectures (26?) about the Black Death, oddly entitled "The Black Death". I think it's only available through June. Interesting to watch in light of current events. There's no reference to Covid, but there was a mention of Ebola, so it must have been made somewhat currently but before this latest pandemic. I've enjoyed the first 6 episodes but I'm a history/non-fiction kind of guy.

We have made it through Homeland, House of Cards, Dexter, Succession, current on Billions, watching Ozark. We have a two-episode date every night of something. We are also astounded at the F-word usage rate in every permutation of verb, adjective, noun and gerund.

Me, DH, current Mid and plebe to be are watching Space Force. It’s good. They laugh a lot. I laugh some.

Also watched Rocket Man last night. Enjoyed that!

In a real shocker, the WWII naval drama Greyhound which Tom Hanks wrote and stars in, has abruptly changed course and will berth at Apple. Originally on the Sony Pictures theatrical calendar for the Father's Day weekend, it will instead become the biggest feature film commitment made by Apple to premiere on Apple TV+.

Curious what those with experience thought? We enjoyed it as an account of a piece of history, a peek into the chain of command. Having absolutely zero exposure personally. But thought as a MOVIE it lacked....DH and I both on the same page there. I’m also not a film critic, so can’t critique adequately, but sorely lacked character development. Needed more ‘before and after’, with then story in the middle very interesting.

Very cool peek into being on a ship and all that.

Happened upon a fun Netflix series:

The Great British Baking Show

A quirky mix of baking and British humor...two of my fav’s!

Any nature program with Sir David Attenborough, his voice alone is a national treasure. Broadchurch, Vera, The IT Crowd.

Just started watching "The Right Stuff" on Disney+

Based upon the 1983 film about the Mercury astronauts.

Speaking of Attenboroughs and what to watch during the lockdown, I would think his Brother Richard is also a national treasure of the English speaking world whose films are always worth revisiting. My favorites, all of which stand the test of time:

The Great Escape
The Sand Pebbles
Flight of the Phoenix

In each of those films, he is the ultimate wingman.
