I just finished my freshman year in high school and i'm hoping to get into the naval academy. I was wondering if anyone might know what my chances of getting in are:

-I have a 3.9 average

-I take all honors classes when possible

-I'm in student senate

-Freshman year I was class treasurer

-Sophomore year I was class president

-I am Congress Captain for the Debate team

-I'm in Cross Country and Track. I'm not in varsity yet since Freshmen rarely are given that chance.

-I'm in Key Club

-I'm in German National Honors Society

-I've won the President's Education Award

-I'm in the United States Achievement Academy

-I regularly volunteer for my neighborhood organization

-My Dad went to the Air Force Academy (I don't know if that would have anything to do with it or not)

Also, if anyone knows how many people apply to go to the academy each year from New Mexico, especially around the Albuquerque area, that'd be great.

Thanks!!

USNA Chances

As with this post you will probably get a resounding: "It depends."

What you have listed shows a great start towards a well-rounded high school record. In addition to the USNA Admissions website there are many sources of information on this topic like the following post:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/naval-academy-annapolis/10054-whole-person-score.html

Other than that, the advice I give students seeking a nomination:
- Take college prep and AP courses.
- Excel in core math and science courses (Chemistry, Physics, Calculus).
- Excel in physical activities. You don't have to be a varsity athelete but you had better be physically fit.
- Get involved in your community.
- Have a strong desire to graduate from the Naval Academy.

Locate and contact your local Blue & Gold Officer for the information you have requested regarding your state.

Good luck!

Also, it's a good idea to start thinking about the PSAT and other standardized tests -- get a review book, start researching a prep class, etc.

Make sure you are ACTIVE in those activities and actually contributing in a meaningful way. The USAA (Achivement Academy) and the President's Academic Award are pretty vanilla. All you had to do was have an A and you get those. Same with German National Honor Society. Those are just names on a paper, and require no leadership or action on your part. Take leadership roles. Find a project, lead others to it and make it happen. Some of THAT on your resume is alot more impressive than a few of the things you've listed.

I'm confused, you state that you're just finishing your freshman year, yet you list class president for sophomore year?
