When are MOC Slates reviewed by the Admissions Board

I am just curious how soon a MOC Slate is reviewed by the Admissions Board. In other words if one of DS nominations was posted on 10/28/2016 has this slate likely been reviewed already? His other nomination was posted on 12/9/2016, would this one have been reviewed as well?

Good question. I'm not sure if they wait for all of the applicants who are on that particular slate to have a complete application. I believe they compare those on the slate and choose one (perhaps two if warranted). If it is a principal then that is different. Some slates are ranked, some are not. Good question though, I'd be curious myself. My DS had all of his stuff in by mid-Oct and got a triple nomination a bit before Christmas. But, do remember, Admissions is really busy now and some are just returning from vacation probably next week. February seems to be when the bilk of announcements will come out.

Thanks. Both slates are competitive, no principal nominations. We will just hold on through February and proceed with the contingency plans.

Great question. I too have a similar question. I would have thought that if the application was complete at the end of August (before the first Board meeting) and only a nomination was pending at that point, then as soon as the nomination was received, the application would be cleared as Yes/ No... However, given the nomination was received more than a month ago, this doesn't appear to be the case...which could also mean that my application isn't bad, but isn't stellar either

Maybe they are waiting for others on your slate to finalize their apps? I would think that there has to be a way to compare you against the others on your slate if you're not a "slam dunk" from Day 1. Otherwise, why have slates and how would they compare you to the other 9? I could be way off. This is just me trying to think this thing through myself. We've been waiting a while ourselves and I know the slate was just submitted. So I wouldn't expect any action for at least a month. As a parent, the waiting is the worst part.

For unranked slates USNA will compare WCS. Applications close on Jan 31. So some candidates on a slate might not be done yet.

Thanks NavyHoops. So just to clarify, a competitive slate is not submitted to Admissions until all candidates applications are complete. Thus the date the nominations are posted have little bearing on when a slate is actually submitted? Sorry if I'm being redundant on this. Just an anxious dad trying to understand the process.

I think it is the opposite. I think candidates on a submitted slate are not reviewed until all applications are complete (again, outside a principal nom). I don't believe MoC's see whether an application is complete or not. I think Admissions waits to review candidates on a slate until all of the 10 have completed applications so that they can compare.

An offer of appointment requires fully qualified candidates (that means full disposition of the 3Qs: Admissions Board, physical/CFA, and medical/DODMERB) who are listed on a nominating slate. Admissions, theoretically, can review slates as soon as the Admissions Board reviews all candidates...but other factors could come into play (which is why Admissions might wait for all Qs to be determined). For example, if Admissions has identified a potential slate winner but their CFA or DODMERB is not complete...well that slate might not be decided until there is disposition for the CFA/DODMERB. If the same candidate were to be medically DQ'd, but the medical condition is waiverable, then the waiver process must occur first. If the waiver is granted (presuming they also pass CFA), then that candidate might receive the appointment and if the waiver is not granted, someone else might be looked at to win the slate. Also, if USNA decides that this candidate should be charged to a different nomination (VP/ROTC/JROTC/POTUS/SUPT/etc), then the slate might have to get reviewed again. Bottom line, there is no rhyme or reason or anyway that one could really know when a slate is reviewed. Many (if not most) candidates will arrive on I-Day and graduate from USNA never knowing who actually nominated them. I realize that many individuals will be curious about this process in the next few months...but it isn't even worth a few seconds of your time to try and figure out if a particular slate has been reviewed.

From my understanding, MOCs can see a candidate's status -- similar to what BGOs see. I believe they also submit their slates online now...which is why someone mentioned that the nomination had shown on their portal two days after their interview.

Thanks usnabgo08. I appreciate your insight. We will just sit tight and let the process continue.

This raises a good question -- who actually makes the decision about who from the MOC slate is offered the Appointment. It was my understanding that the Admissions Board merely makes the determination of qualification for appointment (The 3rd Q ), and that another office in the Candidate Office is tasked with matching up 3Q candidates to a Nomination. Since many MOC use the competitive nomination , someone at USNA must be making the hard choice of who gets the Appointment.

With respect to the orginal post --USNAbgo08 is right -- not worth worrying about the timing. That's probably why the vast majority of Appointements are offered later; CGO must review all qualified candidates and make the determination of who is most qualified and deserving of appointment under a particular slate. That being said, there must be a benefit to getting your package submitted early, as the CGO can't review all slates in the month of February.

Finally, USNABgo08 suggested that most Midshipmen don't know which nomination they were appointed under. THey do know who nominated them, but if they were nominated by both Senators , their Congressman, and perhaps VP or Presidential, etc, but may not know which of those nominations was assigned to them. This is really not a secret, and readily obtainable as part of your permanent record, but BGO08 is probably correct, it really doesn't matter so many don't bother to look it up.

This is exactly right. Admissions (Candidate Guidance Office) reviews slates and makes offers of appointments through the Director, Nominations and Appointments.

Exactly...most will not dig to find who (ultimately) the appointment was "charged" to. The USNA alumni directory (released a few years back) has this information listed (if any alumni want to know).
