When did SAF Come into existence?

@buff - yes June 9th! I was too lazy to look at my own profile for the exact date.
There were a bunch of us - I think all the academies were represented.
As far as CGA goes - it was well represented by bossf51 in the early days.

@time2 - IRRC the catalyst was some anti-military folks posting over on CC - it was during the dark days of the Iraq war and they were quite provacative and antagonistic in their posts.
This site was founded to be a place where folks could learn and talk about the military without being bashed for it and to provide accurate information.

Perhaps everyone has their own recollection of the history behind these forum sites. I know what went on at CC about 2 yrs ago with 3 particular members constantly bashing each other for their different points of views about USNA. The mods stood by and did nothing and within a few months of that nonsense, virtually every other regular had abandoned that site and has never returned. You can search back on the posts made during that time period and read about it for yourself.

All forums strive to provide useful/accurate and current information. In reality, some do a much better job then others at accomplishing that.

It would be very interesting to see how things have changed for members since they joined.

For some people here, they were in high school, went to a service academy, and received their commissions.

Some went, figured out it wasn't for them and left.

Many applied and never got in.

Some went to civilian colleges, some to senior military colleges.

For some their children went through that process, graduated, and the parents have stuck around to pass on their knowledge to the "new class" of parents.

For some their children went but never graduated, and they've stuck around too.

When I joined I believe I was on my cutter. I know I had already graduated. Since I joined SAF I got engaged, served my five years, got out, and joined a firm in DC.

The "new class" of parents gives a hearty THANK YOU!! to those who are still here passing on all that they've learned!!

Happy Easter, all!

Through this site, I was contacted by some parents who lived locally and mentored me through the cadet years. My son is now a firstie and will train as an aviator at Rucker starting this summer. I've taken the experiences I've had, info I've learned and written a book that I hope to be able to have available to newbie moms at R-Day in July. Thanks for all the guidance at SAF...what a great site!

Nice place you got here! Where's the beer?

TN started this place for two reasons:

1) CC was not meeting the needs of the applicants or their parents.

2) CC was overrun with a bunch of America-hating assholes, so this place was started as a place to get back to basics while still keeping it real.

I still remember the night TN first asked me about starting this site, and I'm frankly amazed that he was able to keep it up and running all this time. I am also gratified that something I had a small part in has become such a helpful portal for those seeking to join the Brotherhood.

The only reason I don't visit as often as I used to is because I just don't have the time anymore. :frown:

Nice job, TN! :thumb:

Hard to believe we have been around long enough to have a "History of..." thread.

BTW: nice of Zaphod to stop by and say Hi...he teases us with his presence to remind us he still exists

The prior posters have pretty much summed the history pretty well. The other site was circling the drain and had zero moderator interaction until they decided to delete posts that were factual but reported as Bad by someone who didn't agree. It was really quite ugly at times so an enterprising person decided to start SAF.com.

I consider myself lucky to have been asked to be there from the start and continue to be proud of the site.

Someone has asked how members may have grown/changed: well I was a grad at the time, in medical school, and single. Now I'm married with multiple children and someone actually gave me a medical degree

DoDMERB help

In my DS's situation this site was extremely helpful to us when he was "awarded" a medical DQ one week after HS graduation and literally hours before he flew to Europe for a graduation gift trip. I reached out thru this forum to Larry Mullen on the DoDMERB site close to midnight in a state of panic and fear for my DS's dreams and he called me on the phone within minutes( he was TDY in NYC but still reading and responding to this forum and able to pull up my DS's medical records to produce our unlisted phone #) to begin the medical waiver process ....within a few days USNA medical personnel were calling us for more updated info on DS and a Supe's waiver was granted a few weeks later.....I felt this forum gave us the directions and fast answers needed to get that process started ASAP....DS is graduating from USNA next month with orders to report to flight school later this Summer:thumb:

A Big "BRAVO ZULU" to SAF:beer1: for all the great info and veteran assistance that is available on here 24/7 !

GO NAVY,
