When do Denials usually come?

future, you are missing the point, there is no decline letter, as in Thanks, but no thanks, now move on.

The decline letter is you have not been offered an apptmt at this time, but are on our NWL and we will let you know. In essence, the SA decline is on the same level as being waitlisted by a traditional college.

Honestly, the "traditional university" decline letter for many came back in Feb when they nom slates officially closed and tha candidate did not get one. That was the true Thanks, but No Thanks moment we will not in a snow balls chance in Hades be offering you an apptmt.

Pima, correct me if I'm wrong, but are you saying the Academy NEVER sends a final "thanks, but no thanks" letter to Triple qualified candidates with nominations? I'm not saying you're wrong, that's just surprising. That's news to me.

I received letters, WAAAAY back before most of you were born, that extolled my qualifications, all my achievements, etc...etc....

BUT...

"...I regret to inform you that the selection process for the class of 1982 is about complete and we simply have more highly qualified candidates that we have available appointments. While you have met all the requirements for admission, at this time you are not being offered an appointment..."

Or words to that effect. I tried to find the letters...they're in a storage box that I just didn't find.

So yes, you DO get a letter...

Always, always, always, follow Fliegers opinion regarding AFA.

I took that assumption because I never heard of anyone on this site or CC saying they got a "I regret to inform you"...however, Steve, check that letter and see if it says, "however, if an opportunity arises you will be reviewed" after While you have met all the requirements for admission, at this time you are not being offered an appointment..."

In other words...WAITLISTED.

Not an actual "It's done and over, the fat lady sung", but she is warming up her pipes!

Traditional colleges have:
Accepted
Waitlist
Declined

I do not want anyone to think that the statistical chance of waitlisted at an SA and getting in is the same as a traditional university waitlist. I just want to explain, that I have never heard, "AT this time and in the future for the Class of 2014 we will not be offering an appointment". There is a huge difference, because one is saying "NO WAY NO HOW" and another gives hope saying "WELL, IT'S NOT OVER YET!", when in essence they are politely saying NOPE without closing the door shut.

first you have to have a negative attitude. Understand that everything you put into your brain will happen.

Next they send you a letter.

I'm not a pessimist if that's what your indicating. You can consider me to be one but I find myself to be realistic.

Pima,

You are correct! The letters (USAFA, and others I received) did say that "...it is still possible that openings may occur..."

Basically what the letters said back then was: You haven't been selected yet, odds are you won't be BUT we're not going to tell you that you are OUT.

To my knowledge they have NEVER said you won't be selected.

FYI all...my classmate Alonzo Babers found out about his appointment less than a week before we reported!

He went on to great things: two gold medals at the '84 olympics and now a UAL captain.

Yeti; I don't believe that CadCandMateus was saying that you were a pessimist or negative. At least that's not how I read it. It sounded more like: "Plan for the worst, and hope for the best". Which is definitely the advice that we give every single applicant on the forums.

Which leads to the "DENIAL" question. Denial is definitely the wrong word. As Fleiger and Pima were pointing out, it's not a matter of "Denied". Those "DENIED" type letters don't exist. Those are built into the application process. If you AREN'T QUALIFIED, for whatever reason; and your application isn' 100% approved to go on to meet the board; then you have been "DENIED". The remaining 3000-5000 +/- however many make it to the review board, are ALL approved for an appointment. It's just that they don't have that many slots available. So, as Fleiger and Pima mentioned, if you don't get an offer of appointment, you will be notified some form or another that you are on the wait list. But so will about 4000 other individuals. In theory, if you are on the wait list, and everyone ahead of you turned down the appointment, you could get an appointment. That's because you "PASSED" for lack of a better word. It's just that those ahead of you in score and/or ahead from your district or other nomination, are going to be offered an appointment first.

Now, there are still weeks to go for offering appointments. There is nothing firm yet. Does that mean you will or won't get an appointment? No one knows. Does it mean you should still be working hard at preparing to accept a civilian college/university just in case? Most definitely. You should have those in your back pocket just in case. Even though my son received his appointment in November of his year, he kept 2 colleges in his back pocket all the way until 1 June. That included us having to pay for one school to hold a dormitory slot for him. We never knew what might happen between the appointment and "I" day. Injury, illness, family emergency, change of mind, etc... Best of luck. Hang in there. Always plan for the worst and hope for the best. Mike.....

A story of backup plans

Hey all!

Let me tell you about a young man I'm incredibly proud of.

C2C Trey...

Trey was a HUGELY motivated young man who wanted to go to USAFA in the worst way. I was his ALO. He did EVERYTHING he needed to do (as all of you know) to obtain his appointment. But...he got the thin letter in April.

His backup? AFROTC. Trey received a 4-year "ride" and selected a prestigious Vermont locale for his education. And he dove into it with his goal of becoming an AF officer and pilot.

SHORT version...after 3 years, Trey has been selected to represent his unit in DC at a national ROTC conference. He was "hosted" by a USAF "flag officer" and basically played "junior aide" for over a week. This officer mentored Trey personally, made recommendations for career options, choices, etc., and then gave him his coin, business card, etc., and said "if UPT doesn't work out, call me...I can use a SHARP YOUNG OFFICER working for me."

And THEN...this weekend we had lunch...he's been selected for UPT, nominated by HQ ROTC for ENJJPT...oh and the BIG news?

This summer/fall he's headed to the Australian Defence Force Academy for a semester. What's that? The Aussies have their academies "joint" and do it all one one campus! And he's been selected for an exchange!

I didn't even KNOW ROTC did this?!

WOW!

Talk about a good "backup plan!"

Folks...take a look at all this...not a bad backup!

ALL SORTS OF OPTIONS ARE POSSIBLE, NEVER GIVE UP!!!

Say you get appointed to your second choice academy, and you haven't recieved anything from USAFA. May 1st you send in your acceptance of your second choice appointment- does this remove all chance of getting a late appointment from USAFA (You're essentially removed from the candidate pool)?

Yes that was the point i was trying to get across, sorry if it came out the wrong way

I received my USCGA and USMMA appointments AFTER I had accepted my USMA appointment, and USAFA kept asking for me to complete my file. So, no, it does not.

Let's say you get accepted to one of the other academies (USNA, USMA, for example), but USAFA doesn't accept you quite yet. You accept USNA, and then a couple weeks before Reporting Day, USAFA contacts you and offers you an appointment. Could you then say no to USNA and accept USAFA's appointment?

If I submitted my application by February 12th (because I was given extra time since I had to retake my CFA) is it normal that I have not heard from them at all? Does this mean I am waitlisted?

I've had my application done since October, nomination received in January, and I still have yet to hear back from USAFA as well. Scary stuff...

I'm in the same situation, bendaddy. Finished application in September, nom in January, haven't heard anything back from USAFA, but have been accepted to USNA. My counselor at the AF Academy told me I'd definitely hear something by the first week of April... Yikes!! To wait all these months... and to know that you and I'll hear something this week or next...

counselors

We are still waiting on an appointment for my son to the Air Force Academy. I am a little confused by the comments about an admissions counselor at the academy. Should he be in contact with one, and how do you know which one?

As far as I know, each region of the U.S. and other areas that have applicants for the Academy have admissions counselors. These counselors are assigned by the state each applicant lives in and by their last name. The counselors are the applicants' points of contact with the Academy that handle their applications. If you want to find out who your counselor is, I believe you can find out by calling or writing the Academy. Hope this helps.

If you check the status of your application online, it lists the phone number of your admissions rep. Sometimes hard to reach, but if you leave a message they will return your call. I am sure they are super busy right now....Good luck to you!

Your counselor name and contact info is at the top of your application page.

I just spoke to an admissions rep from USAFA's CollegeWeekLive chatroom. She told me that most candidates should be notified of their status by the second week of April.
