Okay so my application was listed as complete early last week, I got my nomination letter on Saturday, and ACT scores came out today. I'm just curious about how long it normally takes to find out from the Academy. They'll start back with Admission Boards after the break right? So how long did it take for ya'll to find out?

:wiggle: <-- What is that smiley face doing?

It could take until May.

Yes, really.

There is NO way to know if/when a person will be selected or sent "the letter" that says "you're amazing, etc...etc...BUT..."

Some folks have heard already, but the vast majority of the class won't be "selected" until the February-April time frame.

So keep doing what you're doing and "wait..."

You'll know when you know.

The wait is no fun.

It is important that you understand how the appts work. Just because you have your packet in doesn't mean everyone on your slate does, and they have untill the end of Feb to complete it.

Once your package is complete and you go up to the board you are given a WCS. Everytime you add in a new item, only that part of the packet is rescored...i.e. new grades and gpa went up...new PAR score, re-take the CFA, new pts only for the CFA, add an EC new pts only for the EC. They don't look at the whole packet again just that part.

Now you must sit and wait for everybody on your slate to get the WCS. Once the entire slate has the WCS they can start giving out appts. Highest score wins.

You will see appts to start coming out in drips, but don't let that become disconcerting. The bulk (more than 1000 of them) come out in Mar-April time frame, than as people decline their appt, you will still see more come out.

If it comes before Mar scream yippee, otherwise just put it in your mind that Mar/Apr is when you will hear...this is why you shouldn't get injured by doingsomething stupid, and why you should still continue with your back-up. Many parents placed college deposits b/c their child didn't have an answer by the time ED responses were required (some schools ask for it by 3/15)

I know the waiting game sucks, and you just need to know YES or NO asap, but you're gonna have to be patient. Those of us with appointments have until May 1 to accept/decline so if I decide to go Navy, someone is going to get their appointment in mid-May. That is a very long time from now. The best advice I can give is to just not think about it. I know that's hard to do, but your part is done. There's no need to worry yourself. It's out of your hands.

Best of luck!

... and ACT scores came out today...

Thanks for reminding me to check!

I took the SAT twice and had those sent in to the AFA. Then, I decided to take the December ACT. Looking at the scores, they seem to validate the SAT scores... Nothing significantly higher or lower. Am I correct in this assumption?

SAT: Math 670, CR 650, Writing 570
ACT: Math 32, English 33, Reading 28, Science 28, composite 30

Even so, I presume the Admissions Board will reevaluate the academic portion of the WCS. Correct?

Yes they do, and since they superscore, even if you went up in 1 area by 10 pts it will help

Would it then be worth it to sign up for the January SAT and try it one more time? My current scores (minus writing, not sure if AFA counts that) are slightly above the mean and towards the higher end of the mid-50%.

AS long as the scores will be there in time, I would because again they superscore...you don't know the 10 pt raise in MA or CR could be the difference of winning the appt.

I'm kinda worried about my scores and I might try the ACT again
SAT: Math- 600, Reading- 660, Writing- 640
ACT: Math- 27, English- 31, Reading- 28, Science- 25, composite- 28
They are around the mean scores, but towards the low end.
Also does anybody know how the Academy calculates GPA? According to them it's a 3.88 but my transcript shows 4.2...

your SAT scores aren't bad at all, they probably put you in good competition with everybody else, that said, if you had a 1400 combined Math and Critical Reading you'd be in a more competitive league, but I wouldn't sweat it much if the rest of your application is pretty strong

you must have a pretty high class rank with that 4.2! top 5% i imagine!

Yeah my scores don't do me any justice....
But I think my GPA and extracurriculars are my strongpoint so I'm pretty much relying on that...

What is a slate?

Just remember that you get a final score made up of scores from different areas. Academics is one area. Granted, it's probably the most important/weighted area, but it is just 1 area. That's why there have been people with a 4.0 gpa NOT accepted and people with a 3.75 gpa and lower who do get in. Same with some who get lower scores on CFA and get an appointment; while some had higher CFA scores and don't get in. good luck.. later... mike....

Soccerdude,

I believe the "slate" to which PIMA refers is the 10 nominations by a member of congress. If the MOC submits 10 nominations, but they are not ranked in any way, then the Admissions folks consider the best of those ten to award an appointment to that is charged to that MOC. They can't do that until the "packets" of all ten are submitted ("in") so they can then compare them to each other. So, unless you have a principle nomination, you have to not only get your own application complete, but must await the other 9 who also received a nomination. Hang in there -- and good luck!

What is a slate?

The slate comprises each MOCs nominees to the service academy. Each MOC can nominate up to ten people for each vacancy they have, so the slate will be the ten (possibly less) people that he/she has nominated.

[EDIT] RaptorDad beat me to it.

Hmmm... I did not know that. I just thought the application went into this huge group with all of the other apps from... well everywhere. So essentially it's your name and 8 or 9 others that they compare? I don't know if that's good or bad :) Thanks a lot for the info.

Wait... I just thought of something. What if there aren't 10 nominees for the school? For example, what if only 3 people apply to the school and the rest apply someplace else? Maybe I'm misunderstanding...

say I get an appointment (already have nomination), in what method will they notify me? I'm going on a study abroad next semester and my only way of knowing any updates is through my application. does our status change on our application if we get an appointment or will we be only notified via mail. my parents are actually pretty against me applying and I wouldn't be surprised if they made my letter "disappear" as terrible as that may sound...

the four stages on the USAFA application are:
prospect-you show interest
applicant-they processed your application
candidate-you have a nom. or they will seriously consider you
appointee/cadet-you're in!

i could be wrong with the above, but that's the jist from what i can gather from other posts. good luck! :thumb: are you going to spain or something? i wish i could get out of nebraska for at least a little bit...

The only difference is that you won't see it say appointee/cadet. What you will see is it will still say Candidate: However; it will also say "APPOINTMENT OFFERED" and then if you choose to accept it; it will change to "APPOINTMENT ACCEPTED". So, to answer the person going away; when you see it say "APPOINTMENT OFFERED" you have a BAP (Big A$$ Package) either in the mail or at your house. You will then need to open it up and fill out the acceptance portion and mail it back. Later.... mike....

Hi!

Okay, here's an ALO answer...

If you can afford to take BOTH the SAT and ACT again: DO IT.

You can NEVER EVER hurt yourself as USAFA will ALWAYS only only only load into your profile the HIGHEST individual scores. If ANY score is lower, it's rejected...it's as if you never scored it.

SO...you can ONLY benefit!
